Some deft maneuvering made it difficult for the kidnappers to hit their target, but his luck could not last forever. Every so often he would grab something and send it at the attackers, but they were difficult to hit. Dodging in and out of Shadows they darted, making them particularly evasive. That was when he felt it, the stinging pain in his leg that heralded something horrible. Knowing he could not longer run, Ronan turned and prepared to make his final stand. Grunting loudly, his power reached out to a nearby parked car, sending it crashing into one of his pursuers, though he wasn't sure if it did any good. Another pain flared in his abdomen, bringing with it a terrible fatigue. Within moments, the world faded to black as his face hit the pavement. The last thing he saw was a pair of shoes standing immediately over him. Then all went dark.

Nyssa collapsed to the ground, and the guy lifted her into the air, throwing her over his shoulder before walking out into the street, tossing her into the back of a black van. He saw his two companions with the other guy, also unconscious, and smirked. "Two for one? Not bad..."

--

Hours later, Nyssa began to wake up. Groaning, she opened her eyes but immediately closed them again as a bright white light assaulted her vision. She noticed that her mouth was dry, her head was pounding, and her body ached, but she wasn't anymore injured than she had been before she passed out. Trying again to pry her eyes open, she squinted into the light. It took a few moments for her eyes to adjust, and she did not like what she saw. It was almost like she was in an emergency room, but it was empty of people and the bindings holding her to the bed were rubbery on the outside.

A chill shook her and Nyssa realized in horror that she was in nothing but her bra and panties, the rest of her clothes had been removed. Turning her head, trying to get a better look around, she caught sight of another bed like hers and her heart dropped. Ronan lay unconscious on a bed; so much for rescue.

Light. Piercing, bright light began to filter into Ronan's eyes as his lids slowly fluttered open. It took about a minute for his eyes to adjust to the brightness, though his brain remained in a fog. At first, he could see nothing, but could hear rustling off to the side of him. When finally the world began to clear up, Ronan took a look around as fear began to take hold. He could move only his head and his torso, but his arms and legs were held fast by leather straps. Panic immediately replaced fear as he struggled against the bindings. His eyes darted in all directions, then finally settled on a familiar face. Strapped in on a nearby bed was Nyssa, holding the same look in her eyes that he himself imagined having. He tried to speak, but his throat hurt, feeling scraped up and dry. Anger began to fill his heart. Ronan again looked down to see he had been similarly stripped down, laying only in a pair of boxer briefs that he did not recognize. Looking at the leather straps, Ronan activated his ability to free himself but was immediately thwarted as a massive migraine suddenly developed at the base of his skull, right at the top of the neck. The pain he felt from it was unlike anything he'd ever felt, causing him to yell out angrily.

Nyssa tried to free her arms or legs, she even tried to use her ability, but it only caused pain so she settled with straining her body, pushing against the bindings. Grunting as she tried, struggling, no doubt bruising her fair skin, she eventually gave up and closed her eyes softly cursing in Ukranian. Once again Nyssa turned to face Ronan, a frown on her face. He wouldn't have gotten into this situation if it wasn't for her, she should have run when she had a chance. "Ronan, I-"

Her words were cut off as the door to the room swung open and two men in doctors coats walked in. Ignoring the two in the beds they walked over to the wall and flicked a switch, sliding X-rays up onto it. Nyssas X-rays showed that half of the bones in her right side were made of metal, necessary from her accident, pieces extending from her feet to the wires and pins in her jaw and the plate in her skull.

Ronan's eyes followed the two men as they entered, completely ignoring the two they'd captured to inspect x-rays on a light board on the side wall of the room. They studied and spoke quietly about the translucent pictures on the wall and seemed relatively engrossed in their work. Quickly Ronan turned to face Nyssa and shook his head quickly, but subtly. He didn't want her to talk just yet, something he'd learned after being arrested many times. Never speak without your attorney present. He suspected that the chances of obtaining an attorney were slim to none, and without his cellphone he could not contact Jed or anyone else, for that matter. Instead he studied the two supposed doctors as they, in turn, studied the x-rays.

One picture was pretty brutal in appearance, with metal plates, pins, and rods implanted throughout the body. He guessed that was Nyssa's, as he hadn't experienced such traumatic physical damage. His own was relatively boring, with the exception of some sort of opaque blot on his neck, just at the top of the spine. Stemming from it were thin solid lines, assumedly wires, branching off the main body with the ends inserted in his spine and the base of his skull, where they disappeared. The though horrified him as much as the picture did. 'What did they do to us?'

While the men continued to talk in low voices, occasionally pointing to the x-rays, Nyssa closed her eyes. She hadn't tried to use her ability to get out yet, and even though her binds were made of rubber, throwing lightning wasn't the only thing she could do. Slowly calming herself as much as she could, she began to pull with everything she had, but she didn't move a muscle in her body. Sharp pains shot down her spine, but she couldn't stop, she didn't want to. The lights began to flicker, drawing the attention of the doctors away from the wall and towards her. They didn't move, they just watched.

After a few seconds, her body began to vibrate, and she opened her eyes, the blue hue glowing brightly. Then the lights went out, but Nyssa was still visible, the temperature in the room increasing. Drawing that much energy into one spot was going to heat the small space they were in, and Nyssa was practically glowing, though the more energy she pulled, the stronger the pain, which was now nearly numbing her body. The rubber restraints on the right side of her body started to melt, heated faster because of the metal embedded in that side of her body, and seeing that made the doctors react, but they couldn't get within two feet of her because the heat pouring off of her was too much for them to handle.

Ronan watched with amazement as she rapidly absorbed the electricity in the area. Despite the horrible pain he could imagine she was feeling, she was forcing energy into her body. The heat radiating off her body was becoming increasingly uncomfortable, nearing the point of being painful. But Ronan kept quiet about it. What also surprised him was the lack of action on the part of the scientists. At first they did nothing, and hardly moved before the energy became too intense for them to exit the room safely. Again Ronan began to pull against the bindings, but could not get free.

At that moment Ronan decided that he could certainly stand to fight back if Nyssa was willing to withstand such torture. Focusing his eyes on the right hand strap, a quick flick from his brain and the leather was sliced. Though the cut did not make it all the way through, it did loosen it significantly. But the pain felt like he'd been hit in the back of the head by a baseball bat. For a moment he could not see, the pain blinding most of his senses. After a few deep breaths, he tried again. It was a horrible sensation, but one leather strap had been cut in half. The tranquilizer had made his limbs next to useless, making it difficult to move. "N-Nyssa... be careful..."

With the straps mostly melted on the right side of her body, Nyssa yanked hard. The bindings snapped, the harsh movement sending her toppling over the edge of her bed, and since her left side was still bound, the bed crashed to the floor with her. The impact knocked her unconscious for a few seconds, and in that time, the energy she held in her body vanished, dispersing in the air. The lights flickered back to life and Nyssa opened her eyes and moaned, her right shoulder throbbing.

Feeling the shift in energy, the two scientists left the room and seconds later an alarm was blaring, echoing loudly in the near empty room. Forcing the pain to the back of her mind, Nyssa pushed off the ground, rolling and undoing the straps holding her left arm and leg. "We don't have... Time..." She gasped, struggling to move to Ronan's side. Her fingers fumbled with his straps, but she managed to loosen them enough that he could slip through. By then, her adrenaline started to fade, and dizziness was slowly taking hold.

Still feeling very lethargic, Ronan watched as Nyssa undid the leather straps around his wrists and ankles. He could barely stand in the beginning, but adrenaline was steadily pumping through his veins, increasing his strength to somewhat normal levels. He pushed himself off the bed and hooked Nyssa's arm around his neck. "Your freaking crazy, you know that?" Ronan had to plan his next move carefully. The scientists were no longer in the room, giving them a fleeting sense of freedom. He was sure that they were probably still being watched through closed-circuit camera, but he could not see any. He stumbled forward with the girl in tow, then leaned her against the counter so she could rest while he peeked out to see if the coast was clear.

"Okay, so what's the plan here? No one in the hallways, but we're both drained. How the hell are we supposed to get out of here?" The questions weren't accusatory, even being halfway asked of his own self rather than Nyssa. But then again, she was the one that started the escape. Triggering a thought, Cairo closed the door and started rifling through drawers and cabinets, looking for anything they could use. Half naked with no pockets, he grabbed what he could find and shoved them into an empty refuse bin, then removed the bag and tied if off. Ronan went back to the door to check again, then turned to Nyssa.

"Ready?"

Nyssa leaned heavily against the counter, her shaking legs nearly giving out from underneath her. Several times she had to remind herself to breathe slowly, because she had started to hyperventilate. It wasn't easy for her to calm herself down, but she had to in order to think straight. Ronan was right. She had started to try to escape, they needed a plan. Nyssa wasn't going to stand for being a captive here, and she sure as hell wasn't going to let Ronan suffer for being around her, even if she had to get him out at the cost of her remaining there. Besides, he had a friend on the outside, in the force, who could help them. Nyssa had no one.

"I'm ready.." She murmured, pushing off the counter. Dizziness swept over her and she had a hard time remaining upright, but she shook it away to the best of her ability and walked over to the door, putting on her bravest face. "No splitting up. We don't stand a chance alone." Her exhaustion was making her words slur, her accent slipping through coating her words. It had been a long time since that had happened, and in the back of her mind she worried, but escaping was at the forefront of her thoughts. Pushing out of the room, Nyssa began to siphon the energy around them, but only around them, and as she moved down the hallway, the lights behind them flickered back to life, the ones in front going out, keeping them in the dark.

Ronan was astounded by the way Nyssa was able to keep them shrouded in darkness. It was eerie, in a way, for the light rarely shown directly on them. Her power had many uses, it seemed. As each light flickered off then on again, he began to understand why people would be so afraid of them. Imagining a world full of such powerful people would scare him too.

Ahead of them, roughly twenty feet away, was a t-intersection. Ronan had no clue which direction they needed to use, but before he could ponder the subject, a guard sporting an automatic rifle came barreling around the corner. On impulse, before the middle-aged man could fire, he collapsed in a heap, his midsection cut almost completely in half. Ronan grunted loudly and stumbled a little, but regained his footing as the two continued their escape

Nyssa watched with wide eyes as Ronan seemingly effortlessly disposed of the guard. Like he was absolutely nothing. As much as she wanted to be wary of the man walking next to her, she had no choice but to push it aside and focus on getting out of wherever the hell they had been taken. Stopping just before reaching the intersection, Nyssa knelt down, closed her eyes and forced built up electricity through her body and into the floor, sending a mass amount of lightning through the metal pipes in the floor, walls, and ceiling, tiny bolts of lightning dancing across the hallways. Continuing that for a few seconds, she wanted to be absolutely sure that there was no way anyone could be conscious in the hallways no matter which way they turned.

It took longer for Nyssa to stand upright than she would have liked, but she managed to push past the pain enough to remain on her feet. A light sweat coated her body despite the cool air, and her lack of clothing. Using her abilities to such an extent without rest was taking an incredible toll on her body, and even though her expression was as cold and unwavering as the lightning itself, she was falling apart inside. In the four years of having her abilities, Nyssa had never used her power to this degree, for this long, or to purposefully hurt anyone else.

Ronan stood amazed as electricity forked down each hallway. He knew full well that anyone unlucky enough to be caught in that storm would be on the floor and useless. It was obviously taking its toll on the girl. It seemed to him that she was tapping into sheer force of will to survive, but her reserves must have been mostly gone. "We can't keep this up.. you're about to tall over and I get a migraine every time I use my power."

He, too, was sweating heavily, his body slick and shiny. Without his clothes, he was certainly feeling the heat and the cold. He wished more than anything that he could use his brain for more than just moving objects. Pushing forward, he planted his hand on the wall and started walking, bringing Nyssa along with him.

Nyssa struggled to move forward, thoughts of escape fueling her. The halls were clear of any conscious guards so it made it easier for the two of them to find a way out. She knew they had to get out soon, the lights were flickering on sooner than she would have liked and the lights above them only dimmed instead of going out completely. Her body shaking, Nyssa tried to focus, but her control was wavering; a few times she had to catch herself, placing her hand against the wall, her breaths coming out in strained, ragged gasps.

About halfway down the hallway Nyssas legs finally gave out from under her, and she crumpled to the floor. The lights faded out completely for a brief second before coming back to life, brightly. She couldn't go any farther, but she couldn't let it slow Ronan down. Turning to tell him to keep going, she saw a guard ahead aiming for him, and her eyes widened. "No!" Nyssa cried using the last of her remaining strength to shove Ronan out of the way. The guard fired and the tranq dart meant for her companion hit her instead. Already nearly unconscious Nyssa collapsed, her body numbing, paralyzed.

"Ronan.. Go.. Get help.."

Ronan hit the wall at a stumble, cracking his head against the cold structure hard enough to draw blood. He didn't see the results of the guard's attack immediately, but heard the shot pierce the silence of the hall. He lashed out with his power, slamming the man into the adjacent wall hard enough to dent it. Ronan then turned to help Nyssa continue, but watched in horror as she slumped to the ground.

"No! No... we are supposed to get out together!" Ronan fell forward, trying desperately to keep her conscious. He couldn't lift her, he could barely support her head. After several seconds of trying to pull her, Ronan finally let her rest on the floor.

"I will... I will get help. And I will be back for you." With that, Ronan forced his legs to carry him further, despite their pleas to stop. As much as he wanted to rest, he had a renewed sense of purpose. Nyssa had given up her freedom so that he could have his. He wasn't going to waste that opportunity.

Nyssa watched Ronan retreat through blurry eyes, and when he was out of sight she took a ragged gasp of air before finally falling unconscious. She did not wake up again for quite a long time. Her body needed time to recover; she was not used to using her power to the extent that she had and her mind and body were worn out.

Hours later she began to stir. Her fingers twitched, her tired eyes fluttering open, only to immediately shut them again. Bright lights invaded her vision making her already pounding headache worse. Nyssa was once again bound, but in addition to her wrists and ankles, her waist and neck was also strapped down. 'What in the fuck...' She thought tiredly.

By the time Ronan's mind cleared, he didn't know where he was or how long he had traveled. No memory existed pertaining to the details of his escape, but his battered and bloody body gave him the impression that his captors did not simply release him. His mouth was dry and his lips tasted like metal. As Ronan began to push himself up off the hard ground, his strength momentarily faltered, sending him back to the rocky ground. He couldn't tell whether the sun was coming up or going down, but it felt like morning. The air was particularly brisk, suggesting the latter. His first goal: rescue Nyssa.

"Nyssa," he exclaimed loudly. In his daze he had nearly forgotten what she had done for him. Sacrificing herself for his freedom was the kindest thing anyone had ever done for him. Ronan was not about to leave her there to rot. Getting to her was not going to be easy. He would need help. To get help he would need food. To get food he would need to acquire some clothes. Carefully he made his way back to civilization, then took the liberty of helping himself to some clothes left in a laundry room with an open window. Calling Jed would be so simple task, however.
