Welcome to Battle School

Post by Danry on Thu Nov 16, 2017 10:11 pm

"Before we get started, I'd like to say a few words."

The man at the podium was hard and set, planted firmly in his place on the stage, the sun shining brightly overhead. It was a pleasant spring day, warm without being terribly hot or humid. The grass was lush and green, the landscape around the temporary stage accented with multiple flowerbeds. The young man standing at the pulpit had dark, thick hair. He was dressed nicely, though not in a suit and tie like some may have expected him to dress. But that wasn't his style. He preferred utility over appearance. His knuckles, white from his grip on the edges of his podium, were scarred and bruised, clearly having recently been used in a fist fight, and those who stood too near to him felt uncomfortably warm.

He stared into the crowd with his multi-colored eyes, letting the noise dull down until it faded completely before speaking again.

"Those of you gathered here today go by many names: Gifted, freak, blessed, Inhuman, Metahuman, Enhanced... the list goes on. None of that matters in here. In here, you are all the same. Within these walls, you will be tested over and over again, taught to defend yourself against any opponent. You'll face challenges greater than anything in your life. It won't be easy, but if you can stick through to the end, you have my word that it will be worth it. Now, without further delay, I welcome you to Battle School."

As soon as the words left his mouth, a loud, and sudden, bang echoed through the silent auditorium. Every head turned to see what had caused it, as stunned whispers echoed: the doors to the room had been thrown open.

A young woman began walking down the aisle, her choppy black locks swinging as she moved. She was dressed as one would imagine a student, in a plaid navy skirt and white short sleeved button down. She had fishnet stockings and combat boots, her gaze hard as a stone as she made her way to the podium where Ezra stood. Behind her, much to the horror of the student body, was a large hound nearly twice her size. In its mouth were two young men, obviously having been just in a fight. What frightened the students was that the woman had no visible wounds, while the two men were covered in blood and bruises.

Upon reaching the podium she turnes to the hound and ordered it to let go of the boys it had. Reluctantly it obeyed, and it released them. No sooner had their feet touched solid ground did they attempt to flee. With an annoyed grunt the woman flicked her wrist, and the entire auditorium watched as they ran into what seemed to be a solid wall, though nothing was there.

"I found these two humans trying to pass themselves off as students." She said, turning towards Ezra. Her voice was cold, she was clearly unamused. "I thought them a lesson in in what it means to trespass here, and why it is important not to lie to superiors." Pausing, she looked out at the room full of wide eyed new recruits and raised an eyebrow as if ahe hadn't noticed they were there. A half smirk fell across her lips, her gaze drifting over the horrified faces. After a moment of silent observation she turned back to the Headmaster, "Who is to take them to the Liaison? Shall I?"

---

Deep in the mass of bodies sat one such new student, her golden brown hues taking in the scene before her. While she was interested in what was taking place, her expression remained stoic, not a flicker of emotion on them.

"What a tiny woman." Was all she said, speaking softly to herself.

Almost every head inside the auditorium whirled around immediately, the sound of the door crashing into the wall jolting everyone from their passive boredom. They watched as the petite woman strolled in, her sense of confidence pouring off her like a waterfall. The crowd murmured nervous, seeing the oversized canine and the prisoners she held in tow.

Ezra's eyes never left her, his expression exactly the same as it was before she entered. His body temperature elevated slightly, but not enough for anyone to really notice a difference. He listened to the young woman, his multi-colored eyes flicking between her and the humans she had arrested on the property.

"This institution," he began as he spoke to the humans directly. "... is for the training, education, and development of those who have transcended the typical human boundaries. It is not a place for those without abilities to take a look around and see what trouble you can cause. Our boarder captain, whom you just met, doesn't take kindly to trespassers. She must be feeling generous today, as she has full authority to use deadly force if she feels it's necessary."

Of course that was not the whole story. Ryliee and Ezra had already gone over the rules, and how much force and authority she was given. She could be rough, but she was not to endanger a life unless other lives were presently at risk. An incident between Metas and Humans could spark more conflict, and that was exactly what he was trying to avoid.

"Sasha. Leo. Take them to the gate and make sure they are delivered back to town as quickly as possible. File a report and make sure that our security recording is readily available if necessary." Immediately, a pair of Metas flanked Ryliee and her prisoners. Leo, a massive mountain of a main, grabbed one by the collar and hoisted him up to eye level effortlessly. Sasha, on the other hand, was a small young woman, barely five feet tall. She simply lifted her hand and watched as sand collected underneath the second trespasser until it pushed him off the ground. Immediately they were 'escorted' away.

Ezra turned his attention to Ryliee, the look on his face as blank as always. She would know what it meant, but none of the students had known him long enough to figure it out. After several seconds, he averted his gaze away from Ryliee and addressed the crowd once again.

"We take security very seriously at Battle School. Trespassing is not usually a problem, but we do run into issues from time to time. The term trespassing, mind you, goes both directions. While you are here, you must check out with security before leaving campus, no exceptions. It is as much for your safety as it is for theirs. Our border captain and head of security..." Ezra gestured to Ryliee. "... takes her job very seriously, and will not hesitate to correct those who do not follow that rule."

~~~
A pair of eyes flashed from inside the crowd. Surrounded by students, a young man couldn't help but chuckle, hearing a voice in front of him speak about the size of their border captain. He leaned forward and, with a voice wrought with Scottish heritage, whispered softly in her ear.
"Aye, but size donnae matter much. It's about how well ye handle yerself."
Ryliee jerked her head at Sasha and Leo as they departed with the humans, and Pig, the massive hound, followed them out quietly his nails clicking on the floor as he walked. He was part of the border patrol and was going to escort them until the perimeter. As they left the doors closed again, but Ryliee remained standing next to Ezra, her steely gaze now on the students.
Her smirk did not leave her lips, but it was Ezras time to speak to the students and she never interfered with that. Not that she wanted to. Honestly, him appointing her as a head of house and instructor was a surprise not only to her but the other staff as well. She wasn't exactly known for her patience and understanding.
The students nearest to the podium watched her with fearful gazes, their eyes darting from her to Ezra and back again. You could see it in their eyes that they prayed not to ever cross her. Fear was a great motivator.
"Now that's settled, this ends the welcoming ceremony. Please exit into the hallway," Ezra continued the welcome speech, and gestured to the door on the right, "inside your acceptance packets you will find your designated houses. Find your house, log into the system and you'll recieve your dorm assignments. Your Heads of Houses will assist you. Welcome, all of you. Good health, and good luck."
~~~

The voice behind Taika startled her, but that remained an internal reaction as she hadn't moved a single muscle. She hadn't expected anyone to hear her much less respond; she wasn't even aware she had made the statement out loud until the Scottish voice came from behind her.

"That is technically true."

She was glad, however, that the speech was now over and she didn't have to interact with the mystery voice behind her. Its not like she had anything against him, but she was not particularly interested in making friends. Taika wasn't interested in much of anything, really, and just wanted to find her dorm assignment so she could get away from everyone else.

The hall crowded quickly, but the designated house areas were definitely less so, and she was thankful for it. As people waited for their turn to register and get their housing, they formed small groups and excited talking soon filled the space. Taika stood well away from all of them, clearly indicating that she was not interested. A few times someone tried to start a conversation but her lack of response drew them away.

The auditorium emptied slowly, the students meandering toward the door where they bottle-necked by the dozens. Seeing no reason to get up right away, Finn stretched his arms high over his head and took a look around. It was time to make friends, and he wanted to scout around to find the best ones. He had no problem approaching people, in most situations, and had an even easier time making new friends. Keeping them was the hard part, but Finn had gotten used to temporary relationships.

After a few minutes of rubbing elbows with a few of the other students, Finn checked the seal on his document and matched himself up with his new house. Steel Viper's booth was near the front, its logo glistening under the artificial lighting like a beacon to the weary wouldbe warriors. The house Rep was, apparently, no where to be found, but many of his peers were figuring out how to get registered.

It was just after the had filled out his information that he noticed his next target, a right beauty standing apart from the crowd. She didn't appear nervous, or anxious, or angry... or anything, really. Her face was as calm as the faces on Easter Island. 'Challenge accepted,' he thought to himself.

Finn made no illusion; his path lead him directly to her. There was no sense in trying to appear nonchalant or to be sneaky. One didn't make friends by keeping secrets. He simply marched right up to the girl with the blond hair and the sleeved arms, his face beaming as he smiled.

"If I had te venture a guess i'd say you really donnae want te be here. Would I be right?"

Everything was going splendidly; Taika got her dorm assignment, was registered, and was standing away from the crowd waiting for the Head of their house to appear, when the awful thing happened. Someone approached her. It wasn't just any someone, the tone, the accent.. It was the boy who sat behind her for the welcome ceremony. What a pain. Taika stared at him for a moment, blinking slowly, her expression remaining unchanged. She weighed the options of being openly rude, or subtly rude, but he was in her house, and flat out making enemies didn't seem to be the smart thing to do.

"That term is relative. 'Here', where?" Her voice was soft and smooth, thick with her own Ukrainian accent. She would play nice for now to not make any eneimes right away, but she would not be his friend, or anything. That's not something that interested her. The girl hoped that by her body language and tone that he'd get thw hint and go bother someone else.

"Oi!" A loud annoyed voice rang out in the hallway silencing everyone immediately. "Welcome to Steel Viper, I'm your Head of House." The petite woman strode through her house area, a smirk on her lips. "I don't tolerate bitches, whining, or failure. I also don't like losing. Don't do any of those things and we'll be fine. Break a rule, I break your leg. Your house is on the map, find it, get settled in. Now, fuck off I have shit to do." With that, she turned and walked back out.

Taika watched her go, her head inclined ever so slightly, but still no change of expression. "She is even smaller in person." She murmured.

"That's true," Finn agreed, his eyes closing a little as his smile grew. Maybe she wasn't interested in being friendly, but that didn't mean he had to accept it. "But what I meant was here... like right here. In that spot, te be specific." Finn pointed at the ground just in front of her feet, as if that particular tile held some sort of physical or metaphorical importance. "But maybe that's 'cause ye donnae really want te be anywhere else."

Ryliee's voice drew his attention away from his newest and nameless friend for a moment, but only just. Already their house lead was proving that she would be more of a problem than a solution, but maybe that's what the others needed. Tough love. It had worked out fine for himself, after all.

"Anyway, m'name's Finlay, but you can call me Finn. Good te meet ya!"

He wasn't getting the hint. Maybe she wasn't being stubborn enough? Hm. Either way it didn't seem like Finlay was going to leave her alone. He was in her House, they'd see each other everyday, he'd probably annoy her if she tried to make him leave.. Ugh.

"The spot doesn't matter. I don't feel any particular way." Taika responded, inclining her head at him. "Being somewhere, or not being there, foesnt necessarily matter." As she spoke, she pulled the map up, and looked at it for a moment, deciding to try and find her house and room, if only to escape... Everyone. "Taika."

She gave her name and began to walk past him and out of the assembly hall into the fresh air. The wind had picked up a bit and tousled her hair, but she couldn't be bothered to move the strands from her eyes. Taika didn't look back to see if he followed or not, she didn't care. If he did, ugh, if he didn't, well, she wasn't that lucky.

"Taika... I like it!" Finn turned for a moment, looking around at the rest of the students as they flocked into their groups, forming friendships and cliques and alliances all the while. When he turned to face Taika, she was gone. His head darted from side to side, trying to locate the girl. it didn't take long; her blond hair was easy to spot. Finn quickly caught up to her, falling in step as soon as he reached her side.

"It's a pretty piece of property, inn'it? Bet they spent a pretty penny puttin' it t'gether, yeh?" Maybe he was just grasping at straws, but he was determined to find something that she would enjoy talking about. No one could possibly be that boring all the time.

The scenery began to change as they entered their house's area. The walls were stained dark with shiny pieces of chrome throughout. It could have been completely new or incredibly old. It was too hard for Finn to tell on his own. "So what do ye do? Fire? Spikes? Got a gaze that'll turn me te stone?"

It seemed as though he would not follow her, but her hopes were dashed when he fell into step beside her. "Its alright. I like the sea view better." Stopping for a moment in front of their house building, she gazed up at it, her eyebrow raising a fraction. Interesting. "None of those things, actually." She proceeded through the front door and began wandering the halls in search of her room. "My ability is quite boring, and equally useless."

Taika hesitated a moment then decided to give him a bit of leeway. His attempts to befriend her were amusing her. "I am a were panther, though. In addition to my useless ability, anyway. I can only assume yours is more battle worthy considering the scars on your knuckles." Being observant she had noticed the small boxing indicators on his knuckles, either done by bare knuckle fighting or training, in the small amount of time she'd been in his company. "That or you like to hit things."

"Boring?" Finn could hardly believe his ears. "How could you say it's boring! You can do somethin' that roughly seven billion other people cannae do themselves. That's pretty damn amazin', if ye ask me." Truly he didn't understand how she could possibly think of her ability as boring, no matter what it was. Being a were-creature was amazing by itself, but he had never even heard stories about such a crossover. A were-beast with powers? That was scary in its own right.

As the two negotiated the chaotic sea of students, Finn tried to use his ability subtly, trying to keep others from stepping on their toes. "Well, te be honest a lot of that's from just brawlin'. Ye grow up quick in my house, learn te fend fer yerself. But I do like te mix it up though. Nothin' better than a pint after a good tussle."

Taika raised an eyebrow ever so slightly, the change in expression so subtle it could easily be missed. He was definitely an odd one. Perhaps he was an optimist. With a shrug she continued to walk through the hallway, too passive and uninterested to say anything if anyone bumped into her.

"As far as combat my ability is boring, it is hardly useful unless someone is injured." She commented offhandedly. Seeing her door, she made sure her key fit, then moved past it in search of roof access. She figured that Finn would find his room and leave her instead of following, and that was fine with her. Solitude was something she preferred over anything, and since she knew no one there, aside from Finn who kept trying to engage her in conversation, she was content with staying alone.

"You like to fight, then. I assume you are decent since you're not dead."

The talkative young man followed her still, even after she continued down the hall, figuring that he could find his room anytime. Of course there were some rooms he would not enter if she did, but those were very few in number. "Well I wouldn'nae say i'm a prize fighter, but i'm no amateur either." Finn had no problem talking about himself, but he didn't brag too much.

Finn continued to speak about some of the fights he'd been in more recently, making sure to include fights he both won and lost. He skipped over many of the details that were particularly graphic or unimportant, but it kept his mouth running until they reached the roof access.

"If'n your plannin' on jumpin', do Finn a favor and let me get back outside b'fore ye do. If you're just goin' te chill up there a wee bit, i'll get outta yer hair. But i'll make sure te stop by later 'n check up on ye."

Taika didn't look at her talkative companion, just stared out at the grounds. "I'm not going to jump. I just want some time before the 'get to know you' house party begins. I have to prepare myself for being surround by a lot of people." She wasn't being untruthful, and she hoped not too rude, it was just a fact. Taika wanted to be alone so she could gather the strength to be around so many unfamiliar people. She feared they'd want to get to know her, and she wasn't interested in any of that. She already had one person decide for her that they'd be friends, she didn't need anyone else deciding the same. Besides, friends were complicated. She was only there because her friend didn't want to go alone, and they ended up in different houses, not having seen her since they arrived. So much for sticking together.

Unaware, or uninterested, if Finn left or stayed, Taika settled for sitting against the building, looking out over the low rise lip around the house at the grounds. It was spacious and open with woods surrounding the whole area. It couldn't be seen, but entering through the gates there was a subtle difference of being inside a barrier, probably that security womans. It was, she mused, supposed to make the students feel safe given the fact that the Meta numbers were reaching alarming heights to humans. Pretty soon they would outnumber them and the tables will have turned, and humans would be on the run. That was the reason for the school, then? The outbreaks of violence were growing, it would only make sense for them to be able to learn in a secure setting before they were ambushed or whatever.

Time flew pretty fast with her up on the roof, darkness falling over the grounds. She could hear the other houses in the distance getting their welcome parties underway and wondered if her house had started as well. "Suppose I should go..."
