The Facility - Page 3 Empty Re: The Facility

Seventeen's voice echoed inside One's mind, her every apology heartfelt and heart-wrenching. He could feel how humiliated she was by having to be carried, and he had no idea what to say that might offer some comfort to her. It wasn't her fault. The facility kept her weak. She couldn't be blamed for that, a sentiment which he tried to convey to her in his own way.

On the outside, he held her close, not only wanting to keep her warm but to help her feel safe and secure. Their world had changed greatly, her's more than his by far. There was a lot of unknown unknowns, which would make just about anyone nervous.

After a ways farther, Ezra paused, placing his hand on the trunk of a tree just as his cabin came into view. It was a decent size for a log cabin, with light flickering inside and smoke billowing from the chimney. The smell of food over a fire filled the air with meaty, earthy tones. Despite his odd way of eating, One suddenly felt a craving for sustenance far harder than ever before. Just past the cabin was the river, calmly flowing by at a lazy pace.

"Here. The ferry will take you down the river, but will not leave for a while. You will stay here. Eat, and rest. When it arrives with the refugees from Kiev, you will board and take it to Romania. Do you understand?"

"No." Seventeen lifted her head and turned her gaze to One's color.  "No understand. Ferry? What ferry?  Kiev?  Romania?  No understand..." Her words were broken and fearful. Everything he was saying was unknown and terrifying. What was a refugee? Why did they have to go on the ferry, and where were they? "Scared..." She whimpered, again burying her face against One, her grip on him tightening, her body tensing. There was too much going on. It was too new. In less than a week her whole world had been turned upside down and blown apart.

'I don't like this... I don't understand anything he's saying. What's going to happen to us? Where are we going? I don't understand...' Her fear was beginning to grow at a pace she wasn't able to control. Clamping her eyes shut, her body tensed, trembling terribly. Earlier that day she had been comfortable and happy inside their small shack, then she was full of wonder about the world she saw for the first time. But all of that was gone now, replaced by a deep, dark fear. It was getting hard for her to catch her breath, and that wasn't good; Seventeen had started hyperventilating.

'I want to go back. I don't want to be here anymore. I'm scared.'

'We can't go back... i'm sorry...'

The terror that was quickly overtaking Seventeen felt like a knife being raked across One's brain. It was agonizing to know that she felt such a strong fear when he could not figure out how to help her. He did the only thing he could do: try to be reassuring, to let her know that he would not leave her alone. 'Just wait... we will get through this and I'll find a nice quiet place somewhere... just you and me... okay...?'

The sound of his own voice echoing across the void was slightly distracting, but One made it through nevertheless.

Ezra started down the hill toward the ferry house, not knowing about Seventeen and One's silent conversation, though even if he knew it was doubtful that he would have weighed in on it. They didn't have a choice, so there was no sense in debating the subject. One followed behind him, his strength gradually failing though he still had plenty in the tank to get them inside the building.

"Here is where I leave you," Ezra said just as they reached the street. Just a few feet of asphalt to cross and they would be on their way to a normal life. "The boat will leave in the morning. You can rest here until then. Here is money." On queue, Ezra reached into his pocket and produced a leather pouch, inside of which were a few thousand dollars in USD. "Exchange it when you get to Romania."

Without muttering a goodbye, Ezra turned to leave their company, but was stopped when something grabbed his arm at the elbow. Whirling back, he was eye to eye with One, who had an almost pleading look in his eyes.

'Don't let him leave yet... we need him still...'

'Just the two of us? Okay...'

Seventeen shifted her position, sliding out of One's arms easily. She followed the extension of his color to where she assumed thier very brief companion stood. Slowly reaching out, she grasped onto the hem of his shirt, her grip easy enough to get out of. Turning her gaze up to him, her gaze was worried.

"No go, please... colors... everywhere. Scared." Her blind gaze drifted to their surroundings, and though she couldn't see anything, she could pick out faded whisps of color, blurred beyond what she assumed was the trees. "No go.."

One had wanted him to stay. Seventeen didn't understand why, but she would do her best to do as he asked.

Looking between the two numbers, Ezra couldn't help but feel somewhat sorry for them. He may have been rather heartless most of the time, but deep down he had a soft spot for someone being hunted just because of what they are. The two had been through more than Ezra could imagine behind the walls and closed doors of the Facility, and while he could not compared their lives to his, the fear in their eyes told him that they had endured much to get to where they were.

But the ferry was a dangerous place when he was on it. If anyone recognized him, there would be violence, and a nuclear reactor on board a slow-moving ferry would not end well for anyone. Could he justify risking the lives of so many others just to babysit a couple of lab tests gone wrong?

Not to mention the fact that he ha a deadline to keep. If he did not report back at the designated time, there would be consequences, and Ezra hated to disappoint his own family.

Would the two even be able to find their way once they arrived? Could either of them read?

"...fine. Until we reach Romania. Then you are on your own."

One nodded his understanding, then started down the hill, thankful that Seventeen was able to communicate their need, even if she didn't understand. 'We don't know enough about where we're going. This is all new, especially to you. We need a guide. As soon as we get where we're going, we'll let him leave and we'll hide away somewhere. Just the two of us.'

"Thank you." Seventeen turned her gaze to the area Ezra's voice had come from. She still could not see him, due to his lack of color, but she could discern where the sound had originated. Releasing his shirt, she followed One, moving slowly, feeling the cool ground under her feet. Her steps were slow, uncertain, and though she still felt tired, she pushed forward. The only way to get stronger way to keep going, and force herself to move.

Seventeen understood a little why they needed Ezra to stay with them, but it still confused her somewhat. But the thought of getting to stay with One, just the two of them, made her beyond happy, and she would do whatever he asked to achieve that goal.

'We will be okay in the Romania? We won't have to move again?'

All she wanted was to be with him, and to stay with him forever. Safe. Secure. Only the two of them. Too many people frightened her, the world frightened her. One would keep her safe. One made her happy. All she needed was him.

Getting to the ferry was easy enough, though Ezra's behavior became more and more odd to One the closer they got to actually getting on the boat. He became more secretive, quieter, avoiding areas where people might be looking at them more than just a passing glance. Of course all of the actions he took made sense, given that all three were basically fugitives. Still, through it all Ezra was calm and cool, moving in ways that seemed natural to the unknowing people around them.

Though many moments were tense, sending waves of fear through One, for each time he thought they had been recognized, the trio finally made their way to a small room in a long hallway of identical spaces. Much like a train car, Ezra slid the door open and invited the two inside. There were two long benches, similar to padded church pews. There was a curtain over the window, blocking out the outside view, which suited their purpose just fine for the time being.

After a brief inspection and a little apprehension, One guided Thirteen to the bench on the right and let her sit down. Ezra followed them in, then shut the door behind them. Taking a seat opposite of the pair, Ezra breathed a sigh of relief and rested his head against the wood panel behind him.

"We'll have to keep our voices down, but we should be safe for now. Once we're underway a cabin attendant will bring drinks and snacks. It's a long ride, so they will also offer meals. With luck, we will not be noticed. You two can rest now if you need to."

Relying solely on One to guide her, Seventeen took her time to assess the others on the ferry. She had noted, however, that their companion had, for a brief moment, a flicker of color as they walked. It seemed that he did not want anyone to recognize him, and for a moment she wondered why that might be. Ever the curious creature, but not so nosy as to come out and ask, she resigned herself to the fact she may never know, and shrugged it off.

Finally seated, Seventeen ran her fingers along the seat and wall to try to get a feel for the area, and once she was comfortable enough in her seat, she brought her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms tightly around them. Though they were in the same room with a human heater, she still felt a chill creeping up her spine, and she started to become worried that she was going to get sick. Seventeen kept this to herself, however, as she didn't want to worry One. With a weak immune system, she didn't want to drag the two of them down, especially since she had practically begged Ezra to come with them.

'He does not want to be seen.'

Sensing Seventeen's chill, One removed his top, then pulled Seventeen into his lap, draping the garment over her to cover as much of her shivering body as possible, though it wasn't much. The temperature in the car was rising steadily, though One knew that it wasn't all about being cold. Seventeen was afraid. Everything was new to her, frightening her as much as others feared death itself.

Stroking her hair to try to soothe her, One looked up at the man across from them, trying to figure out exactly what his motives were. He had heard the stories while out in the world, but he never imagined that Ezra was real, but just a myth made to make people like him feel better about there lives, as if there would be some hope for them.

'I bet he doesn't. He's a hero to people like us, but a terrorist to humans.'

Seventeen curled into One, clamping her eyes shut to block out the colors dancing in front of her eyes. It wasn't like she needed to see anyway. 'He is like us, but not like us. He was never a Number. If he is a hero, he is a scary one.' Seventeen rested her head against her companion, feeling her legs throbbing though she had not walked nearly as much as the other two had. She couldn't help that she had little to no muscle mass to her entire body.

The longer she lay in his warm embrace, the deeper she fell into a disoriented state. It was like Ones warmth was drawing her down, deep into the abyss of unconsciousness. Even her fear of the outside world, and what awaited them at the other end of the ferry trip wasn't enough to keep her eyes open.

"No go..." She murmured softly, something she would whisper every night before she fell asleep against One, still scared she might wake up alone.

'Yes... he is...'

One's heart felt as if it were being stretched through a taffy puller and rolled out over and over again. He was happy to be with Seventeen, that she had taken to him so quickly and so completely. He also felt nervous about having such a dangerous young man in their midst. He was afraid of what the future would hold, and angry at the facility for what their scientists had done to Seventeen, but also relief that they were leaving that place behind.

One sat very still, his hand gently stroking the back of her head. Seventeen's hair was thick and matted, with enough tangles to put any strand of Christmas lights to shame. He hadn't really noticed until that moment that they both probably looked homeless. It was no wonder that they got so many harsh glares as they boarded the ship.

Their counterpart stared ahead blankly, watching the way One held the other number so protectively. Ezra knew it would be a long voyage without having anyone to talk to, but he actually found that, most of the time, he preferred it that way. Needless conversations were to be avoided, according to his own father. Still, this mission was unlike the others he had taken. Gathering some information could have proven to be valuable in the future.

"Inside that building, they tortured you there, did they not?" One nodded, snapping the clicker embedded in his back once, figuring an auditory response would be useful as well as a physical one.

"Experimented on you?" Again the question was answered with a nod and a click.

"How long were you there?" One shrugged his shoulders. Days and nights ran together. He had no real concept of time inside the facility. Only when he was let out to go on 'errands' did he understand the passage of days and hours and minutes. With no windows inside, and sleeping being interrupted almost every time it came, who would know the time?

"Forever." Seventeen murmured. She was not quite fully asleep and had heard their conversation. "Born there, live there, die there." Cracking open her eyes, she turned her gaze to the other one, her hair falling over her face. She could barely hold her head up, or keep her eyes open, but Ezra wanted to know, then he would know.

"Too power, terminate. No good, terminate. No behave, punish, terminate. Be good, punish. No power, terminate. Soldier, lock away, terminate. Many Numbers. No survive." Her expression was blank, but her stare was unwavering. "They take you. Hurt, burn, freeze, blind. Poison. Light. Dark. No end. Only terminate. Starve. Cry. Beg. Bleed. Number to Number. Fight to die." There was so much more, but it was bringing back too much pain, and misery. Seventeen couldn't stop.

"I stop them. Bring nightmares. Forever sleep. Torture like they to me." The girls tone got dark, hatred seeping from every word, not a hint of remorse. They had made her into what she was. Twisted her, tortured her from the time she could remember. There was not a single living number that had been there as long as her, or been through as much. "Scream and torture. They enjoy the cry."

"Revenge gets people killed, and not only the ones that you wanted dead." Ezra's voice was flat, but sorrowful, with a gaze that seemed to pierce the room and leap into the past, though only for a moment. Like a flash it came and went, and once again he was focused on their conversation. "This is the way of researchers. Their thirst for answers lead them down dark paths. Every innovation that people enjoy today came at someone's expense."

Ezra knew full well what the poison of revenge could do to someone. His own desire for vengeance had taken it's toll on him, even though he was just a young man at the time.

Attached to Seventeen's emotions, One could feel the hate and loathing for everyone at that facility. It made him sad. She was a sweet girl who did not want to be alone. She'd shown him nothing but kindness. What they did to her had added a dark twist to her sweet demeanor, and One hated them for it. He wanted revenge too, but he was just as content to leave them at their backs and never speak of them again.

'We will disappear. They won't find us.'

One's grip tightened ever so slightly, to tell her that he was there to protect her. She didn't have to be afraid of anyone ever again. He was her sword and her shield. He would kill whatever tried to harm her, and be there to keep her demons at bay while she slept. Though he did not know it yet, he loved her. He craved her. He had desires for her that were both primal and passionate, logical and illogical.

It was a shame that he couldn't filter all his thoughts when they were connected...

"No want revenge.." Seventeen murmured sleepily, angling her body so that she was more firmly pressed against One. "Only want free. No have before, want now." A deep yawn shook her entire body, and once again her eyes closed. She was not asleep, but very close though determined to stay awake or at least aware enough of the things around them.

'We will be free forever, right? You'll never leave me?' Seventeen had heard him assure her before that he wouldnt leave, but it was comforting to her when he told her, even if it was for the millionth time. Anxiety and fear pushed through her almost every waking minute, her only reprieve was when One was close to you, holding her. It gave her mixed emotions, something she wasn't used to feeling. Inside the Facility she had felt nothing for a very long time, but outside its walls was a whole new set of unknowns and dangers. It awakened the emotions she had kept buried, hidden for so long.

She could feel his own emotions through their bond, but she was too naive to really understand what it all meant. He felt strongly for her, she could discern that much, but the rest was lost on her. She had no education, no knowledge, nothing. It was like being a small child in a womans body when it came to knowing the most common of things; like what grass was, or snow, or what love felt like. It was hard for her, even with One. He was strong and able and he had an ability that could defend or attack, and she was weak. He held her as she slept, fed her, helped her walk in unfamiliar terrain, but what could she give him? How could she ever return the favor of his kindness, and patience when she couldn't even take care of herself.

"I promise. I'm not going anywhere without you. One's body was warm against her. He tried to stay as still as possible so Seventeen wouldn't be uncomfortable, holding her gently all over, so she would feel protected. He couldn't help but marvel at the situation. Though it was dire, he had found someone that depended on him, and upon whom he depended. He may have been her guide in many things others took for granted, she gave to him a sense of purpose, of belonging. She did not think of him as a shapeless monster, but of a human being, capable of feeling just like everyone else.

Ezra stayed quiet as well, staring out the window as the boat moved away from the pier at a painstakingly slow pace. The horn bellowed its deep song, but the sound insulation made it very difficult to hear from their room. He thought back to his father, about what he had learned from the man that sired him and trained him to be the soldier he had become. Ezra could count on one hand the fond memories he had of his father, but he could not dispute the fact that the old man had been right about almost everything up to that point.

"You best rest while you can. Once we're off the ferry, you won't have the opportunity again for a while." Ezra turned to face the couple when he received no reply, only to find that both Seventeen and One appeared to have fallen asleep together. Jealousy coursed through his veins for just a moment, but faded quickly into a depressed resignation. He would never have what they had. He would never know love. He would never have affection. He was an outcast among the only two groups of people there were, and there was no going back.

The Facility - Page 3 Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Sat May 26, 2018 12:55 pm

Seventeen slept against One rather peacefully for quite a time. The heat coming off of their companion did help; normally her sleep would be interrupted by bouts of a bitter cold wind ripping through the shacks walls. Not this time. It was a steady heat, and it did a lot to help her maintain a deep sleep.

Though, it wasn't all peaceful. The talk before she fell asleep was about the Facility and it's horrors. Her sleeping brain had dredged up those images and fears, pain and torture. She shifted in One's arms, a slight sweat beading on her skin, breaths becoming ragged.

Again, Seventeen found herself on the dissection table, she was six or seven at the time. She wasn't scared anymore and had stopped talking by then, but she had not yet been blind. It was going to be their last test to see if they could gain any results from her before they would send her for termination. Seventeen remembered how she had longed for it, even at that young of an age, hoping for some sort of release from the endless torture.

Her arms had been strapped to the table at her sides, and her feet as well. They hadn't used the waist strap or neck strap in months because she had just stopped trying, and they no longer wanted to waste the effort. Even though she couldn't see now, she could recall the bright lights above her, the white of the doctors coats, how dark everything else seemed against it all.

"Do it." A man's voice, and pain followed. An electric shock straight into her temples. Seventeen remembered her body convulsing on that table and how she thought she was going to die, how she cried when it was over, gasping and coughing. But it hadn't been over. Again and again, until something in her brain clicked and she got mad.

Outside her dreams, Seventeen forced herself to wake up, startled and disoriented. The swaying of the ferry as it moved through the water had destabilized her, even in One's arms and she slipped out of his grip rolling to the space between the seats. Trying to keep herself from smashing face first into the floor, her arm shot out and grabbed the first thing she could. It just happened to be Ezra. One of her fingers was just barely brushing the bare skin of his arm, since she was so disoriented and unprepared, her gift triggered automatically, only it didn't just allow her to see into his mind [flashes of images from his past, broken and scattered], it allowed him into hers, and her most recent nightmares.
