Keeping her gaze out the window, Ryliee watched the world go by in a blur. She noted the tension, the authority.. And the vehicles that seemed to follow them, without obviously following them. Flicking her gaze to Ezra once before sighing and turning her attention back to the scenery, she spoke. "I can feel it. The wrongness. The Mundanes watching like we were wild, ravenous animals on the verge of lashing out.."

The girl closed her eyes, her fingers twitching. "If those cars keep following, I might feel inclined to flip one or two." She mumbled, yawning. Perhaps she needed another coffee, or an earlier bedtime. "Pick it up. I want to see the body before it reverts back to the ecosystem."

"Let's not do that... We're already on thin ice with the locals. They'll use anything tactic they can to get us indicted." While he did not believe there was a way in Hell that Ryliee would allow herself to be arrested by a Mundane, Ezra believed himself to be a man of moral standard. They were doing good work as they were, but they could not allow themselves to become the terrorists they were hunting. "But it would be funny," he added as visions of beleaguered government agents stumbled out of their wrecked cars.

With a quick glance out the corner of his eye, Ezra depressed the clutch, changed gears, and mashed the gas pedal. Immediately the car accelerated another fifteen MPH and climbing. He weaved between cars expertly, leaving the black vehicles lagging behind.

By the time they reached the scene of the crime, the government vehicles were no longer visible. The murder had occurred inside a warehouse that stored parts for airplanes, boats, ATVs, and other assorted motor craft. The entire property had been taped off and beat cops were spaced about to make sure none of the onlookers got too close. Ezra parked the car near the tape and stepped out, saying nothing to any of the officers on duty but flashing a badge so they knew to stay out of the way.

Inside the bay, a glass dome roughly five feet tall and just as wide lay on the floor, surrounding a pile of black powder. Upon closer inspection, four more domes lay strewn about. "Must be the bodies. I'm going to have a look around. Keep you're phone on."

Ryliee hopped out of the vehicle following close to Ezra as the entered the building, a black bag in her hand. She grunted in response to him and moved to the domes around the soot piles. Dropping her bag, she knelt down, cracking it open, yanking gloves onto her hands. Since the 'bodies' were in domes it was safe to assume they might be toxic. Fishing a gas mask and a pair of clear plastic goggles from the bag, she pulled them on and crouched into a dome, pulling her bag with her.

She took samples in vials and petrie dishes. Labeled in baggies and sealed tight. Sifting through the powder, she saw a tiny hardened fragment, and frowned. Using tweezers to look at the white fragment she held it up to the light, her eyes squinting. "Hm." Ducking out of the dome, she found similar fragments in the other piles.

That was unsettling. The pieces looked as if they'd been mixed with the soot. They looked like pieces of a puzzle. "Oi! When you're done I'll be outside.. I have nothing more to get from here." Walking outside with her full bag of relevant evidence she leaned against the warehouse and lit a cigarette

Ezra's search had been relatively uneventful. There were no bullet holes or spent cases, no burn scars on the metal walls, ceiling, or floor, and no blood. Mundane agencies had already reviewed security footage, but had yet to confiscate it, allowing him to obtain a copy. Ezra saved the data on a flash drive for later viewing. Interviews had already been conducted and, unfortunately, all witnesses were already on their way to police stations in the area. Frustrated but not completely deterred, Ezra swept the outlying areas to have another look when his eyes caught sight of something interesting.

"Hmm," he said as he bent forward, using a gloved hand to collect an odd collection of hair. Thick and orange, the fibers more closely resembled fur than human body or head hair. The sample had be caught in a small gash on the edge of one of the bay doors. With a shrug, he made his way back toward his partner, who he found around the corner with a cigarette between her lips. "Alright, finish up. We're done here." With nothing more to say but more questions, Ezra made his way back to the car, where a trio of men with D.O.D. badges and official dress.

Ryliee walked and smoked, pushing off the building with little prompting from Ezra. Seeing the D.O.D. made her frown, eyes narrowing in distaste assuming they were looking at her the same way. Her grip on her evidence bag tightened, body tensing. Just being around people made her antsy. Ezra was really the only living thing she could stand to be around without wanting to commit suicide, and that was saying something considering he annoyed the hell out of her.

The men seemed to be in the way of the car, so, of course, Ryliee did the logical thing and lit another cigarette, flicking the butt of the old one directly at the trio. "Oops." She cocked her head, hair falling in her eyes to hide the permanent dark look that screamed 'try me' at anyone who dared. Ryliee was just itching for an excuse-any excuse-to lash out.

D.O.D. Agent Bloom watched as the butt of Ryliee's smoke landed near his freshly polished black designer shoes. Ever keen on flaunting his influence, Bloom was never found under-dressed to any occasion. "How cute, the little freak thinks I actually give a shit about her childish mockery." Bloom's British accent was prim and proper, completely void of the cockney that people of his nationality were stereotyped with. His smile was genuine, for he honestly thought so little of Ryliee and Ezra that it amused him.

"We're here on orders, Bloom, so unless you have something important to say, I'd suggest you step away from my car."

"Or what? You'll use your witchcraft on me? Sic your she-bitch on me? Please, i'd think about taking you seriously if it weren't for the fact that i'm just better than both of you in every way." Ezra immediately recognized what Bloom was up to; trying to piss Ryliee off enough to cause her to react. All he needed was an excuse. Just one would shut down the entire program and likely put them both in prison or worse.

"Oh she'd drop you faster than your heart can beat, Bloom... if you still had one. But no, it's easy enough to get around you. You have no power over us, no authority, and you didn't bring enough guns to actually threaten us." Ezra's temperature rose, not in anger, but in anticipation. The whole day had felt off to him; what if this meeting was the catalyst?

Bloom chuckled again. "You have no idea," he replied.

Under normal circumstances nothing Ezra could say would stop her from causing the agents heart to explode, but she had been warned to be on good behavior that day; besides, she knew better than to let a Mundane bait her into potentially going back to prison. So, she laughed. "She-bitch? Is that the best you can do?" A grin spread across her face, twisting her features.

She blew a cloud of smoke into their faces, shifting on her feet. "If you're going to insult me try harder next time." Ryliee paused for a moment, considering her next words. "You know.. Looking at you I think I can understand why you're always suited up and so full of yourself. You think if you act all big and mighty people won't realize you're just a pussy with a microscopic dick." Shrugging, she side stepped the agent, moving toward the car. "Now, if you'd get the fuck out of my way, I can do what you incompetent flesh bags can't: solve this case."

With that, Ryliee yanked her car door open and stepped inside the vehicle. On the surface she was calm, collected, but just under the surface was a rage bubbling, almost near the breaking point.

Bloom's face twisted with anger. He was not nearly as patient as some of the other agents and officers they'd met in their adventures, but then again few were. The agent started to speak, but Ezra cut him off before he said something that got he and his escort killed or worse. "Back off, Bloom. You insult her again like that and you're going to find yourself in a very bad situation. I don't care how many people you have at your back." Ezra's words were laced with venom. He could tolerate being insulted personally, but regardless of the fact that they were sometimes at odds with each other, Ezra was always first to defend Ryliee. It didn't mean that he wouldn't give her a hard time about it later, but he doubted she knew how many times he'd spoken on her behalf and vouched for her.

Stepping through the trio, Ezra moved toward the car with his back to them, showing that he was not afraid of anything they might do. He closed Ryliee's door to signify that their meeting was over, then moved to his own and prepared to climb in. Bloom's voice boomed in the silence, a final threat before allowing the pair to depart.

"Just wait freak. Your's is coming."

Without another word, the door was closed and the car was started. Ezra threw the stick into first and took off, leaving a foot of black rubber on the pavement. His blood boiling, Ezra whipped the car through traffic faster than normal, taking more risks than he usually did on their routine commutes. Though Ryliee was able to properly contain herself, Ezra was not always so thick skinned.

"Oh, calm your tits would you? Let that fucktard get under your skin and he wins." Ryliee stated boredly. "Besides, he'll get his... And I'll be the one giving it to him." Her words were colder than usual. Ryliee was used to insults, and looks, there wasn't anything he could say that she hadn't already heard. But that didn't mean she was okay with it. She knew she was a 'freak', even by Meta standards; her ability was dangerous, and more than one watchful eye was on her.

"You think you could get us to the lab without killing us first?" She said, dryly. She was looking at the shard she had found in the soot piles, trying to examine it closely without taking it out of the evidence bag.

Ezra snorted. "I am calm, and we'll get there just fine. Don't worry so much." His driving did not change much, but he did bring the speed down below a hundred. Ryliee was right and he knew it, but it didn't make him calm down immediately. Something about Bloom's comments made him wonder, especially given the morning's events, the watchful eyes and mysterious vehicles following them. Instinctively he check all the mirrors, confirming that they were not being followed. "I just hate people like him."

Finally Ezra took them off the highway and into the city. Morning traffic was beginning to thicken, but thankfully there were no traffic jams to bog them down completely. The car purred as they waited for a traffic light to turn green. "I know you'll be busy checking out what you found. I'm going to do some background checks on these unfortunate souls, see what they had in common. When you find something call me and i'll---" Ezra's words were cut off as gunfire ripped through the air, tearing holes in the hood of their car and impacting on the window. The bullet proof glass stopped the rain from breaking through, but it also made it impossible to see.

Pressing the petal to the floor, their car roared into the intersection, clipping a few vehicles in the process, though they didn't make it far. The gunfire had sent everyone into a panic, which meant stopped cars and terrified pedestrians. There was no way to continue driving without hitting someone else.

Startled, Ryliee shifted in her seat. Slouching low, she put both feet on the windshield and kicked as hard as she could. Glass rained down on the hood as the bulletproof windshield was thrown forward. Now they were able to see, but they were open, weren't they? Of course not. Sitting up straight, Ryliees eyes darkened and she lifted her hand, pushing her ability forward, shielding the car. No more bullets could get through, or hinder their vision. There was only one problem: the engine was on fire.

"Out!" She forced her door open, grabbing Ezra, and the small evidence bag she'd had moments earlier. Yanking them away from the burning vehicle she didn't have time to grab anymore when a deafening explosion tore through the streets. Freeing her hands, Ryliee threw them into the air as a barrier engulfed them, metal and fire raining down from the sky. They were protected and safe but their evidence was gone. Vaporized in the fire. "God dammit!" She growled, angrily, the barrier flexing around them.

"Fuck," Ezra spat as the fire in the engine began to spread. There was no time to save anything inside the car. No evidence. No weapons. Not even his emergency stash. The pair barely made it out of the vehicle before the flames engulfed it. The gas tank exploded in a fiery mass, spraying debris and flaming fluids in all directions. Ryliee's shield kept them from harm for the most part, for which Ezra was grateful. Other than being a bit scraped up, he was no worse for the wear. Forcing himself into a sort of meditative state, he slowed his heart and began to look around. Though he could not see their assailants, he could hear where their guns were.

Having taken cover behind trees and other cars, six gunmen pointed their weapons in their direction and laid siege to their shield. Ezra didn't know how long Ryliee could maintain her power, and he didn't want to find out. She would need her strength to fight back. "The car is six o'clock," he said as he put their trashed vehicle behind him. "I'll take the three on the right, you take the left."

Ezra was off in a sprint, using his audiokinesis to create a small bubble that pushed the bullets away from his body. It was no where near as powerful as Ryliee's shield, but luck was on his side. No one expected him to rush forward, believing it to be a foolish move. But however foolish, it succeed in getting him closer to their enemies. The first rested behind a tree, caught reloading his weapon. Ezra opened his mouth and blasted a sonic assault toward him, a directed attack that left the man's brain a stewed mess inside his skull.

'One down, five to go...'

Ryliee grinned, slowly advancing to her targets. She locked them in an impassible barrier, preventing them from escaping. As she moved forward, her left hand shot out and she pointed at one assailant. A bubble formed around his head, all oxygen cut off. His weapon fell to the ground as he struggled and clawed at it trying break free to breath, she did not let him. The second gunman fired at her, but the billets ricocheted off her own shield back towards him a bullet lodging itself in his skull. He fell, dead before he hit the ground.

Her third and final target dropped his gun and rushed her. A knife glinted in the sun, but she just laughed. "I have more experience getting rid of Mundanes than you have at getting rid of people like me." She hissed, lowly. He swung at her with his blade, but she grabbed the knife and twisted it out of his grip, the sharp edge tearing into her palm. She barely felt it. Clamping her non bloody hand over his face, she pushed a microscopic bubble into his mouth. As it went down his esophagus into his stomach she expanded it so quickly, his body seemed to explode.

Dropping him, and the now deceased first assailant, Ryliee turned to see if Ezra required assistance.

Laser focused, the second and third targets came into view. They were dressed in dark clothing and Kevlar body armor, but certainly not military grade, which meant he could not depend on any assumptions regarding their training. Their aim wasn't bad, though. It was unfortunate that they didn't realize exactly what they'd be facing. The monsters at the ends of their sights were far more skilled than some token scrubs looking to make a name for themselves. Ezra sprinted toward them, both hiding behind a large decorative boulder.

Emitting a wave in front of him to deflect another wave of bullets kept him safe, but not entirely. While one proceeded to empty his clip at the approaching Meta, the other pulled another weapon off his back and prepared it. Ezra had no time to contemplate it's purpose; a piercing high frequency sound poured from his pursed lips. Like a laser it peppered the armored gunman's body, piercing through the vest and ripping his organs to shreds. He died over the course of a few seconds, spitting bloody as he gasped for air.

The final opponent had readied his new weapon, something akin to a shotgun but with a larger barrel. He pointed the weapon at Ezra and pulled the trigger, releasing a canister of explosive materials. The can passed Ezra, but exploded behind him, sending him sprawling to the ground. His barrier gone and his brain rattled, he tried to force himself to his feet but something prevented him from standing. A desperate scream sent the assailant back against a truck with a sickening crack, though he could not be sure if he was dead or just injured.

Strolling casually over to where Ezra was sprawled on the ground, she lifted the last gunman into the air, in a barrier, then let it drop him to the ground. His body splattered across the pavement, leaving no doubt that he was, indeed, dead. Crouching next to her companion, she looked him over, her head cocked to the side. "You alright there, partner?" She asked.

The rage she had felt previously had been somewhat subdued, but she was still angry over the loss of evidence, though she knew she had saved at least two essential pieces of it. Grasping Ezra's arm, she helped to pull him up, making sure he was not gravely injured. "Looks like someone doesn't want us to find out the truth. Unfortunately for them, this just clued me in to some very important information about the culprit." She mused.

It took a few seconds before the world started to come back into focus. Everything was doubled in his vision, and his ears rung loudly. Being sensitive to sound was an unfortunate byproduct of his power. Eventually, despite all that, he found the strength in his legs once again, and allowed Ryliee to help him to his feet. "Yeah, i'll be fine." The feeling of fresh warm bloody dripping down his arm took his sight to her hand and quickly he'd realized what happened. Turning it over at the wrist, he stared down at Ryliee's palm and sighed. "Come on, let's get back to the office and get your hand fixed up.

Moving toward one of the bodies, Ezra swiped a long piece of fabric from one and tore it into a strip to wrap around Ryliee's hand. He also snapped a picture of the man's face and gear for reference later. One could never have too much proof. "I'd love to hear your theory on the way." No sarcasm could be found in Ezra's words; he was genuinely interested in what she had worked out in her mind. Ryliee was brilliant, without question. If their thoughts matched up, it meant they were usually on the right track.

Ezra headed toward a vacant vehicle and sat in the driver's seat, stabilizing his vision as he waited for Ryliee to climb in.

Ryliee stepped into the car, fingering the evidence bag in her skirt pocket. She wasn't going to tell Ezra about it until they were safe from mundane ears. "The murderer is human." She stated matter of factly. "No Meta, in my experience, would hire boring humans to go toe to toe with people like us. A Meta wouldn't be that stupid. Only a human would trust another human to do something for them. Only humans would willingly embark on a suicide mission."

She clenched and unclenched her injured hand, staring down at it. The skin was tight, and red, irritated. Ryliee wondered if it would scar, but she smirked at the thought. All it would do was add another scar to many others. "I have another secret, but I'm not sharing until we're back. I don't want any other surprises. I hate surprises."

"You don't like surprises? Since when?" Ezra was, of course, kidding with Ryliee, trying to lighten the mood in the stolen vehicle rather than darken it further. Still, what she told him was troubling. If it were a human that was responsible for the deaths, they were dealing with a much different case. Human crimes were handled by a different division, but he knew that the murder of Metas would likely go unnoticed for so long the killer would die of natural causes before they really investigated the matter. Only a few miles from their office, Ezra eased off the gas a bit and came in more normally.

As he parked, Ezra turned to his companion and leveled his gaze on her eyes. "Keep that part between us. I don't want anyone knowing what we're dealing with until we're sure and have already taken care of it. If we leave it up to those goons it'll just get mothballed until the next millennium." Ezra stepped out of the car, checked his phone one last time, then made his way toward the building. Another set of prying eyes fell upon he and Ryliee, but Ezra ignored them completely and made for the elevator that would take them to their lab and office.

Ryliee stared at Ezra as they got into the elevator a dry, unamused look on her face. "Who would I tell? My pet dragon in my castle on high?" She scoffed and rolled her eyes as the elevator took them to their floor. She kept her hand in her pocket, acutely clasped on the evidence bag, and did not move it until they reached the office. Once they were both inside she locked the door and pulled the blinds.

"Now for my second secret." She pulled the bag from her pocket and set it on his desk. Inside was a small vial of soot and a single glittering fragment. "I will confirm my theory, but taking in to consideration the events of today, no one can know I have this. If a Mundane is responsible then they are offing Metas and if anyone knew I had evidence.." She didn't need to finish her sentence, the meaning lingering in the air.

"Yes, that's exactly who I worry about. You don't feed him often enough." Stepping into the office, Ezra set to the task of pulling the medical kit out of his drawer while she closed the blinds and locked the doors. He listened to her secret, then processed it carefully. "You're right about that. If anyone finds out, you're toast." Ezra pulled some supplies out of the kit: a stitching kit, some rubbing alcohol, peroxide, gauze, and some tape. "Sit," he commanded after she'd insured that no one was listening.

Placing her upturned palm on his desk, Ezra began to clean the gash carefully with the peroxide and gauze. It was a deep cut and would likely turn into quite an impressive scar, something she was not foreign to seeing. He didn't bother warning her about any possible pain. If she felt it, she wouldn't let on, but she would expect it anyway. He was careful not cause any undue discomfort. "How's it feel," he asked referring to her hand as he started to stitch it up.

"He eats when he wants to," Ryliee replied nonchalantly. "He'd survive if I died, not to worry." She did not flinch, or whine when he began on her hand. Her expression remained impassive, though the pain was intense. It burned like someone had pressed a hot coal into her palm.

"It feels like someone is stitching a pretty bad cut on my hand." She watched as he expertly repaired her hand. It hurt, but she was more focused on finding the human responsible than the pain. Filthy, stinking Mundanes. I will find you. And I will end you.

"That's pretty accurate," Ezra said dryly. While he wasn't surprised by the stillness and lack of emotion, he was impressed. He didn't know many people that could sustain such an injury and not at least wince a little. Ryliee was a brick wall, a steel trap locked tight around her feelings and emotions. He finished stitching up her hand, then wrapped it in a thin sterile cloth over some gauze so she could still use the hand if she chose.

Now finished playing doctor, and not in the fun way, Ezra began to replace the materials and let go of Ryliee's hand. "Alright... you're free to go. Take two ibuprofen and call me in the morning. Ugh.. bad joke, forget I said that. Let me know who you find from your pile of dust and debris. I'll be here working through traffic cams."

Ryliee smirked, flexing her hand again. "Might call if I had your number," she said flippantly as she grabbed her dirt heading towards the lab. "Then again, Doctor, would you even pick up?" She laughed as she entered the lab without waiting for a response.

Setting to the task at hand, all amusement faded from her face. She pulled gloves over her hands, and opened the evidence bag. She put the shard on a slide and pushed it under a microscope to see what it was. Then she scooped a fraction of the soot into an even smaller vial, placing it in a machine that would break down the composition of it. She took another small sample of it and prepared different acids to submerge the dirt in.

Now that the machines were at work, and the acids were doing their thing, Ryliee turned to the microscope to examine the shard. It was made of a chromic material, with writing in it. No, not writing. Coding. Like on a chip. "What the fuck?" She frowned. Ryliee hadn't realized it, but she had been immersed in the lab for hours.

"Heh," Ezra replied, left wondering if she was serious or not. She had his work cell, but almost everyone had that number. He'd given his personal cell phone number to no one, however, for he trusted none with it. He would have trusted her with it, but it never came up in the past, so Ezra never thought about it. When the door closed, he shook his head and got to work, reviewing video feeds, personal reports, and a list of the people who'd checked into the hanger through security that entire week, looking for some sort of abnormality. It was like looking for one particular needle in a stack full of needles.

An hour went by. Then another. But on the third hour Ezra finally found something. The deceased all had one thing in common; each in every camera feed and ever picture appeared to be nervous about something, disoriented even. What bothered him was that they all seemed to start at roughly the same time. The videos never caught them with another person, though they seemed to use their cellphones frequently. Ezra wrote himself a note to check their phone records.

Using that lead as an excuse to take a break, Ezra left his desk and locked the door, then made his way toward the lab, where he knocked on Ryliee's door. It was a courtesy to knock, but prudence was the much more real reason. There was no telling what she was doing in there. Last time he entered unannounced he'd nearly lost a finger.

"Ryliee. I need to talk to you."

"Yeah, yeah, come in." Ryliee mumbled. She was sitting in a rolling chair, and pushed herself to one of her machines as it beeped. "Sit down and shut up. I'll be with you in a moment." She pulled up the results on her computer, her expression turning grave. Pushing off again, she rolled over to her other machine, and pulled up those results as well. "This is fucking whack." Pushing herself once again back to her microscope, she'd completely forgotten about Ezra and began examining the fragment again, turning it, zooming in and out, focusing and refocusing.

She'd been at it for about ten minutes when she remembered he was in her lab. "Shit, sorry, what? Did you say something?" Ryliee looked up, pulling her glasses off her face, and brushing her hair from her eyes. Rarely did she ever wear her glasses, but at times like this, when hard science was involved, she wore them.
