The Facility Empty The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 8:56 am

"You should have stayed longer. After you left the party really stepped up?"

On opposite sides of an office desk sat two mean, both of them well dressed and well groomed. Daylight filtered through the narrow slits left open with the drawn curtains and blinds, though the overhead glass globe above them provided enough light to see clearly except for the far corners of the room. The smell of cigarette smoke filled the air with a linger haze above their heads. The man with his back to the windows leaned back in his chair, holding a scotch glass with a bit of liquid still contained at the bottom, surrounded large cubes of ice.

"Yeah well, I never was fond of snooty swanky parties anyway. Give me a quiet room with a cigar and a glass of scotch and i'm a happy old man." Opposite of the speaker was a significantly younger gentleman, but bore a strong resemblance to the elder man across from him. They were, in fact, related. Oscar Schuler, head of development, and his oldest grandson Niklaus, set to be Oscar's replacement when he finally retired. "Besides, I recall you being the life of the party anyway. I would have just been white noise at the head table."

Niklaus chuckled lightly and took a sip of his drink. "Not so, grandfather. Your work has revolutionized the way things go here. It was your genius that brought on the WT project. People respect you here, and that is nothing to laugh at."

"Bah, respect. You can't take respect into the afterlife with you, grandson. No one will remember me as respected. They will remember me because of the legacy that I leave behind, in your hands. The future will be shaped by what we accomplish here. Respect has nothing to do with it. Our genius and our hard work will completely change the world, and if we are very lucky, not one person outside of the Facility will ever speak our names."

"Oh grandfather," came another voice in the room, this time belonging you a striking young woman with fiery red hair tossed wildly behind her shoulders and fierce blue eyes that could penetrate even the most oppressive darkness. She extinguished her cigarette in a nearby ashtray then stood, pushing her tight skirt down her legs to cover her thighs. "You speak as if you were going to die tomorrow. We all know that you are going to start your injections tomorrow." The woman in the black skirt crossed the room and sat down on the edge of Oscar's desk.

"Lavena, nice of you to finally speak up. You are certainly my granddaughter."

**********************************************************************************************************

Overhead, a set of led lights dimly illuminated the inside of a 10'x10' metal and glass box, hermetically sealed to contain the subject within, just like every other patient that shared the same ward. The only three entrances to the box itself were the door, which was always sealed, a small vent to allow air to recycle, and a filtered tube designed to pump acid into the container should their be any issues. It kept the subjects in line, just in case any of them decided to cause any problems.

Most of the metal cages were empty, their subjects and contents incinerated when an experiment failed. It was foolish for them to think they they could ever achieve as much success as they had with 001. Nearly perfect for that strain of gene therapy, 001 suffered almost none of the ill effects of the drug, save his loss of the ability to speak. Sure, there were many successes throughout the hundred or so trials they had processed, but none of them could hold a candle to One's abilities.

Unlike the others, he showed no signs of mania or blood lust. They took no chances, of course, sometimes even doubling the restraints and guards in case he were to ever snap. But never once after his mind was broken did he resist. He had become numb to everything. Death. Fear. Happiness. Desire. None of these things mattered anymore. He did what he had to do to survive, and that's all that mattered. He did not complain, but there was a simple reason for that: He could not. He used to make noises that would indicate his mood, but after realizing that they were never responded to, One quit using them around anyone except his fellow test subjects.

The door, the only viable entrance and exit to the chamber, began to open, allowing a brief and soft rush of wind to flow through the room. On the other side of the door stood several guards. Two approached and entered, hooking their long poles to the devices around his neck and pulled him out. "Let's go, One," a guard commanded as he connected another pole to the ring around One's waist. "Doc's want to see you."

One nodded, his eyes locked on the nearest guard's neck. Watching everything with a distant and passive look in his eyes. He made no sounds, but walked along with them, never once stepping out of line or acting inappropriately, for he knew there was no escape, nor reprieve. He would not feel the sensation of freedom ever again. He would die there, alone and helpless, and his spirit would never find peace.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

The darkness was eternal. Quiet. Forever expanding into nothing, no walls to block it, no light to taint it. Silence was not golden, it was black, and deep. No color could permeate the thickness of the inky blackness. And that was perfect.

Solitary was the place where the dangerous go. It was where they put the successful experiments that were the hardest to handle. The scientists hated throwing away the ones that had potential, so whenever they had one that was proving difficult they would be thrown into Solitary.

Seventeen was one of the special cases. She was quite harmless when left alone and given what she wanted, which was to be kept away from others. The only time she was bothered was for her checkups with her doctors, and occasional testing. When they had discovered what she was capable of, and the way it reduced her health they decided being away from the rest of the numbers was a good idea.

That day it changed, however.

Early in the morning her door opened, a doctor's appointment scheduled to see if her immune system had gotten any stronger. Seventeen had undergone a physical, and she was given vaccinations. She knew something was going on when the colors shifted from their neutral grey to one of excitement. Frowning, she could do nothing as she was led away in chains, but they did not take her back to her cell. Instead of the swirling color of emotions getting less and less, it grew. They were taking her to the Common Area. Why? She hated it there.

Seventeens frown deepened, her mood switching rapidly from passive to annoyed. Her chains were released upon entering the Common Area, and turning her blind gaze to the room, she scowled at the assault on her eyes. Red. Yellow. Purple. Orange. Black. Grey. All at once the colors came at her and the noise of it all jump started a headache. Those men would pay for dragging her to that wretched place, putting her in with all those people.

Lead into a small examination would, One was pulled into the center, where he stood patiently waiting, his eyes cast to the floor. The guards kept a close eye on him even if he didn't resist even a little. Why would he? There was no chance of escape. If he tried he would be melted down in an instant, liquefied or incinerated like the others. Or worse, they would turn him into a statue, a paralyzed mass of misshapen flesh plugged into machines and tubes so they could study him, harvest his cells to make more WTs, as they had tried not long before. Better to live on his feet while he still had recognizable appendages.

A door on the far wall slid open, allowing a man and a woman to enter the exam room. One still did not look up, even as they stood next to him and prepared their instruments. He made no indication at all that they were even there when they drew what could only be described as fluid from his arm. The female then took a scalpel in hand and cut a bit of flesh from his arm, which prompted a hiss from the subject, as he was given no warning or anesthesia before the extraction occurred. That was not out of the ordinary, so apart from gritting his teeth and tensing up a bit, One still did not move.

Though the guards were all thinking it, not one of them dared to speak to their prisoner, to goad him into making a move. They enjoyed their opportunities to punish the experiments, but some were not to be trifled with. After a few more instructions, One was removed from the room and taken to the common area. Socialization time was required for most of the experiments, as it gave them a chance to weed out any pent up frustrations without taking it out on the guards. Simply put, it kept the livestock in line.

Per the usual, One found himself a corner away from the din of the crowd, unable to speak to any of them. His eyes flipped through different lenses and shades, watching everyone, including the frail young woman that never spoke to anyone. Was she like him? Couldn't she speak? No one ever spoke to her, so maybe she was mute also. One did not dare approach her. The less he knew, the longer he lived.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 9:01 am

Pressed against a wall Seventeen crouched down and ripped a section of her dress off, wrapping the dirty fabric around her eyes. It wouldn't completely block the swirling, headache inducing colors, but it would dull them, especially if she closed her eyes. Now it was time to find someone to carry out the start of her retaliation. It didn't take her long to locate someone with the brightest yellow, the strongest fear. Gender was impossible for her to determine unless she had physical contact with the blurry mass of swirling color, so soon enough she would find out.

Seventeen pushed herself up to her feet, bracing herself against the wall, very aware that there were guarded eyes on her. It started the guards to whisper back and forth; she was to be watched, but handled gently if she were to get out of control. She was fragile, easily damaged, but there was absolutely no skin to skin contact. No matter what.

Weaving through the crowd of numbers expertly though she was blind, she stopped in front of the bright yellow splash of color. Crouching down, Seventeen pulled her gloves off of her hands, tilting her head to the side. The action of taking her gloves off was overlooked by the Others in the room, but the guards knew better, taking action immediately. They began to swarm her, but not before she was able to gently caress the side of the bright yellows face, which she discovered was a girl. In the few seconds they had contact, Seventeen was able to yank forth the girls worst nightmare, setting it up for replay until she passed out.

The second the guards yanked her away, the girl started screaming. It was an agonizing, blood-curdling, terrified cry. The guards were startled at the sudden noise, allowing Seventeen to slide out of their grip and weave her way back through the crowd, occasionally letting her fingers brush against other numbers. Some dropped, unconscious, some became agitated and began to turn on their 'friends', some collapsed as their nightmares surfaced. Seventeen knew there were cameras in the room, so when she had pressed herself against the wall once again, she pulled the makeshift blindfold down and turned her blind eyes up towards the nearest one as if to tell them "This is what happens when you force me to socialize".

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 9:02 am

A sudden commotion caused One to look up from the floor. He could not see over those between him and the source of the noise, but from the sound of it, someone was going to get locked up. Some of the experiments were screaming in terror while others clambered over each other, trying to escape the unseen disturbance. Though he could not see much from his position, One had an idea of where it had originated. He might have investigated further, but not only did he not care that much, but the guards that were starting to flood the room did not appear to be in a friendly mood as they surrounded a large clump of experiments and pushing through others.

There were some subjects who decided to take advantage of the situation. Their anger boiled over, sending many over the edge. They turned on each other, throwing punches and tackling one another in a bloody riot. One sidestepped out of his corner, trying to calmly evade the bulk of the fighting, but it wasn't long before someone grabbed his shoulder, spinning him around to face the experiment.

Hardly anyone saw what happened next, as it took place in the time it took for him to blink his eyes. Like a strike of lightning, a set of sharp spine had pierced his flesh in several places all over his body. Each entry wound was placed with surgical precision and made cleanly, all of them being non-life threatening. He was forbidden from taking the life of another experiment unless he was ordered otherwise. Even using his Wild Type was a major offense, but he had simply reacted to the attack. One didn't think, he simply did.

Of course it was only a few seconds later that he, two, was surrounded and restrained. He offered no resistance, and allowed them to escort him past his cell and toward Solitary. One was a brutal, unforgiving beast, but above all, he was smart enough to know which lines he could cross and which he should have left alone.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 1:51 pm

Seventeen watched the colors change rapidly, fluctuating brightly out of control. If she were more sadistic she would have enjoyed the calamity she had caused, but she did not care much. It was not that she hated the others, it was not that they had done her wrong; they were a means to an end, they were her pawns, her tools to use to obtain what she desired.

It didn't take long for her guards, completely covered from head to toe, to grab her and pull her from the room. She knew exactly where she was going, and she was glad for it. Seventeen had achieved exactly what she wanted, and they knew it. What they didn't know was that the two guards pulling her to her cell in solitary were soon to be in irreversible comas as a tribute to the good doctors who thought it a good idea to put her in a situation they knew she hated.

She caught sight of a number a bit ahead of her with guards. At first she wasn't sure it was a number, but closer examination of the color there was slight indications of what every other color had. But it was different than any other that she had seen. It didn't jump around, swirling and fluxuating. It stayed completely still, dimmed by something. Seventeen would have loved to figure out what the cause of it was, but it was time to show those nasty scientists and doctors who they had messed with.

Without so much as a sound for warning Seventeen ripped the mask off of one of her guards and placed her bare hand against his face. For a moment, both of them were stunned, shocked at how aggressive she had become. When he dropped to the floor, she whirled around and pushed her small body against the other guard, moving him enough to snap him out of his shock. He moved to grab her, but she was thin and very agile, so she was able to sidestep him, pulling off one of his gloves as she did so. Twisting her body around, she got behind him and laced her fingers with his. Seconds later he also dropped to the ground leaving Seventeen alone in the hallway with two comatose men, easily twice her size.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 1:52 pm

The walk back to Solitary felt longer than usual, like they had taken an alternate route when he wasn't paying attention. But it didn't really matter how long it took to get there, the destination was not going to change. Ever since the trials started, ONE had gained an excellent memory, the limits of which were far beyond that of a normal human. While the researchers were extremely excited by the emergence of an intellectual talent, there was a measurable amount of hesitation and anxiety, for it meant that the serum was capable of things they did not foresee.

Behind him the din of the brawl began to die down, until it was little more than a memory. With that raucous out of the picture, ONE picked up the sounds of other sets of feet behind him. He could only assume that the footfalls were those of a pair of guards, escorting the aggressor who instigated the fight in the commons area. The third set of footsteps were considerably lighter than the other two, and did not have the sharp thump that was generated by military-grade boots. They were soft sounds, which told that the prisoner's feet were bare, barely slapping against the metal floor.

They were light, too, soft like a young adult. Whomever they belonged too, they were very malnourished and under-exercised. Combat must not have been her designated purpose, or her muscle structure would have been much more dense. ONE did not turn around to look; he made no indication at all that he knew someone was behind his group until the bodies began to hit the floor. The three in front whirled around, watching as a young woman, frail in figure but strong in determination, took down her two guards just by touching them.

ONE was surprised, though he showed no expression. Nothing excited him anymore, even the commotion that followed a riot. He watched as his guards left him to confront the girl while securing their gear to prevent her from touching their skin. The first guard pulled his baton from its holster on his hip while the other dislodged a device similar to a cattle prod on steroids. Neither of them rushed forward, knowing well the girl's power to be extremely dangerous up close. She may have caught the first two off balance, but they were not going to make the same mistake.

*****

"You know the plan?"

Ezra responded simply by nodding. He had never failed a mission in his short time in the world, and nothing was going to stop him from completing his next task.

"Good. Remember, they are going to be slow to respond, but they will respond. This is not a CIA safe house. This is not a rebel outpost. These people are trained to handle the very monsters they create. But they have not seen you yet. Your job is not to rescue, but to distract. According to our source, there is at least one experiment that does not want to leave, and others that should not. Provide an opportunity; they leave at their own risk and of their own free will."

"Yes, sir," Ezra said before descending the hill. Snow had just begun to fall a few hours before the riot began, blanketing the ground in a thin layer of powder which melted as Ezra stepped through it. By the time security spotted him, it was too late. Blasts of intense heat slammed into the building, weakening the structure and peppering the walls with holes. True to the commander's word, private security and soldiers began to fight back, shooting through windows, new doors, and the roof.

*****

The building shook violently above them. Alarms blared and screeched in the hallways. The assault outside mixed with the riot inside sent the entire facility staff into a disorganized panic. The guards between ONE and the unnamed girl turned to each other to coordinate their efforts. A strong male voice from behind a helmet spoke out, yelling to be heard over the alarm. "Alright you two, let's go. Now!"

A strangled response came from his partner. The guard turned to face him again, just in time to watch as he was lifted off the floor by ONE himself, his hand having gelled to encompass his neck. There was a brief twist, a squeeze, and a crack as the guard's spine suddenly crumbled under the intense pressure that ONE provided. When the guard was released, he crumpled to the floor, his entire neck looking like a tube of toothpaste that had been squeezed until it was empty.

ONE's eyes settled on the second guard, his gaze passive and cold. The staff member might have suffered a similar fate had it not been for the reinforcements that had appeared behind ONE. A pair of taser darts stuck in his back and sent thousands of volts of electricity coursing through his veins. A shrill cry pour from ONE's mouth as his body spiked and spasmed, going silent only after the power source had been exhausted, causing ONE to collapse unconscious.

The girl did not move after both of her guards had been dispatched. That was not her goal. She did not want to escape, nor did she want to go anywhere else where there could potentially be more people. All she wanted was to go back to her cell in Solitary, so when the footsteps of other guards approached her slowly, she turned her blind gaze towards them. Halfway to her, however, an alarm blared, and having one of her senses gone, the others were heightened. The sound, while loud and annoying, was much louder to her.

With a soft cry, she placed her hands over her ears and crouched down, pressing her body against the wall. She did not hear the call of the guard, nor the cry of their expirement as he was electrocuted and hit the ground. Her eyes were clamped shut, guards rushing the two numbers, a few grabbing the unnamed number, and then her by her clothed upper arm, careful not to touch her exposed skin. Alarmed, she yanked back and slammed her free hand against the guards chest, trying to push him away, the noise causing her to be disoriented.

Seventeen lashed out, tearing at the guard that had her, managing to reveal a bit of his flesh, pushing herself into his mind. In a matter of seconds, she had rearranged his memories and motives placing him on her side of the struggle turning him against his fellow guards. Releasing her, he turned and began to fight against the reinforcements. He would have been easily put down if not for the sudden surge of experiments fighting for their freedom. The guards ultimate goal was to bring her more guards so she could put them out or turn them to her side, but priority number one was getting to the downed number, the interesting color generating number, and bring him to her.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:03 pm

Superficial damage had been inflicted to the levels above ground, but those were just the front. Ezra knew that the heart of the facility existed below ground, which made it more tricky to access. He could not just go strolling through the building and find access just by looking around, assuming that the directors would simply collapse the upper levels to keep their secret safe. However, the distraction was working... sort of. The shootout had pulled several guards away from the experiments, though there was no way for Ezra to know how many were left. Seeking cover, he continued the firefight, counting the seconds he could afford to spend there before retreating.

*****

One's eyes fluttered open slightly, the world hazy and foggy before him. His entire body ached as if his muscles had been torn apart and taped back together. He tried to push himself off the cold floor, but faltered at first, his strength sapped. His head throbbed; pain pulsed through it like ripples on the surface of a still pond. One caught the shape and color of the girl he'd seen before, though her finer features were concealed by his dazed condition while the alarms sounded overhead, muted as they were.

More guards had entered, swarming around the pair, shouting orders and manhandling them to follow their orders. One tried to disable the reinforcements, but his body simply would not listen. He collapsed again, his arms having given out, causing him to bounce his chest against the floor. He stared up at the girl, his eyes occasionally darting back and forth between her and the guards. A high-pitched whimper escape his throat, but it was unlikely that anyone heard, given the commotion going on around them.

"Get 'em out of here! Now!" A voice pierced the fog, giving something for One to focus on for a moment. Diverting his attention from the number nearby, his long black hair began to solidify until it became almost a set of dreadlocks with sharp blades at the ends. Those dagger-like edges perforated a guards back, the one closest to the other number. The man grunted and screamed, then dropped to the floor in a blood mess, alive but bleed profusely.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:03 pm

Seventeen did not resist the guards as they came for her, instead using her own controlled guard to assist her in turning their priorities around to aid her. Making her way towards One, she weaved around the people rushing through the halls. Even though she was blind, she was able to avoid touching who she didn't want to touch. Arriving in front of him she knelt down and extended a hand towards him to help him to his feet. She made sure that her hand was gloved so she did not directly touch him.

Most of the guards in that section of corridor were either down for the count or on her side, deflecting other expirements and guards. "What are you waiting for?" A number yelled as he ran by. "Nows our chance to be free.. hurry up." The man disappeared, fighting could be heard up ahead, more slaves to scientists aching to be free.

Turning back to the man before her, she tilted her had to the aide, her offer to help him up still available. She didnt know if he wanted to be free or not, to get out of that place, but she had no desire to go into the outside world where there was no place for her. Where colors would be rampant and bright and unpredictable. The Facility was all she knew since she could walk, who knew what unknowns lurked beyond the walls.

Since her concentration was elsewhere, she didn't see another number round the corner. He was bloody and hurt, darting away from his pursuers as fast as he could. Not watching where he was going, he tripped over a dead guard and slammed full force into Seventeen knocking her back. Startled, she inhaled sharply, caught of balance, her head cracking against the hard floor. Almost instantly her world was encased in darkness.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:04 pm

The hallway had become a confused mess, overrun by a stampede of terrified experiments and facility staff. Several times One tried to pick himself up off the floor, only to be knocked down by someone rushing by. Eventually he was able to regain his footing, and a brief moment was all he needed to assess the situation. The girl that had protected him, had saved him from time in solitary, laid prone on the floor while another number scrambled over the mass of bodies. With a growl of frustration, he quickly lifted the girl off the ground and slung her over his shoulder. She was much lighter than he thought she'd be; it took almost no effort to carry her.

Many times he leaped over the body of a fallen number, either having been trampled by the mob or cut down by an overzealous guard. One carried the limp-bodied girl through hallway after hallway, darting around corners and bounding up stairs until he reached a heavy door. While the other numbers disregarded it and continued their flight, One new better. He shoved the door open and entered a garage. He did not know how to drive, so the vehicles inside were basically useless. It did, however, mean one thing:

An exit.

One stopped suddenly, looking around the parking structure for the exit. It was dark except for the overhead lights, which told him that they were not yet above ground, or it was just not an open-air bay. For a moment he began to panic. Tired, out of breath, and in pain from the voltage that made every cell in his body clench and flail, One began to wonder if the attempt would even be worth the effort, closing his eyes for a few seconds, he made himself calm down and look at the situation again with a more level head. There had to be an exit, somewhere for the cars and trucks to go when needed. The air was not as sterile-smelling, which meant that outside air was, in fact, lingering inside the structure.

One's thought process was interrupted by the sound of an engine echoing inside the garage. Turning to the side, he spotted a black sedan roaring toward them. Too weak to fight or flee, he could only watch as the vehicle skidded to a stop just a few feet from them.

"Get in!" One heard the driver yell with urgency in his voice. The driver's side rear door flung open, revealing another person in the back. Both of them wore the gear and uniforms of facility guards. Of course One was skeptical about the motivation and intentions behind their treachery, but he did not see any other options. If he stayed where they were, they would be discovered. If he tried to hoof it out, he would likely be unable to carry the number slung over his shoulder. Getting in the car could take them right back to solitary, but it was the best and only chance they had of being free. Growling deeply, One placed the girl in the car and then sat down next to her, closing the door just as the car took off again.

The ride out was not terribly long. The guards tried to speak to One, but he never responded, instead either staring out the window and watching the country speed by or looking at Seventeen, worried about her well-being.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:05 pm

It took a while for Seventeen to be able to pull herself out of the painful darkness and back into awareness. Even as she tried to open her eyes a sharp pain sliced through her head and she moaned softly, shifting her position. That was when she noticed she was not lying on her bed in Solitary, nor was she lying on the cold hard floor where she had fallen. Immediately she opened her eyes and sat up, trying to figure out where she was. She saw the color of guards in front of her, and next to her was the dimmed color she had seen in the hallway, the one who had fallen. But she didn't understand why they felt like they were moving when she was sitting down.

Seventeen attempted to stand up, but there was something above her head, hard, preventing her from standing. Since it was inanimate she could not see it. It had no color. No emotions. Frowning deeply she turned to the side and tried to move to the side to escape whatever was above her, but there was something made of the same hard material blocking her way. Seventeen ran her fingers along the surface, her body trembling. What was she sitting in? How did she get there? Where we're they going?

The more she thought about it the more her headache grew, and the less she understood. Grunting, she moved forward and placed her hand on the guard directly in front of her. She shifted through his memories, trying to get a grasp on what was going on. When she found what she was looking for, she recoiled from him, pushing herself back against her seat. They were out of the Facility. They were going out into the real world, a world Seventeen knew nothing about, a world that she didn't want to be in.

Shaken from his dazed state, One whipped around and rested his eyes upon the panicked girl sitting beside him. The car rocked back and forth, creating a very disorienting environment for everyone inside the cabin. He being unable to speak, could only watch the madness unfold as the number tried vainly to escape until she finally came to rest as far away from everyone as possible. One had been on the outside. He wasn't as deeply frightened by the prospect of being in the real world, away from the confines of the facility, from the tests and exercises, from the training... No. One saw it as a gift.

Turning his thoughts back to the girl, One knew he would have to get her to calm down if she was going to have any hope of surviving in the outside world. He could not offer any words of encouragement or comfort, so he did the only other thing he could think of. Slowly, carefully, he reached toward her shoulder, hoping that the gentle physical contact would show her that she was in no real danger. Of course One had no idea what her power was, nor did he know anything about her blindness, but that did not change the situation. It never really occurred to him that it was actually painful for her to be outside of confinement.

One produced soft, deep noises, similar to the purr of an adult cat, hoping that the soothing sound would help to calm her further.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Physical contact was strictly forbidden. She could do awful things to people who touched her. Didn't he know that? Didn't the guards warn him? The moment he touched her shoulder, though it was covered, she whipped around to face him, her unseeing eyes wide and unfocused, but locked on him. What was he doing? Wasn't he afraid she was going to ruin him? Her dark brown hair fell across her face, semi- hiding her terrified expression. What was going to happen to her now that she was outside? Who was going to keep her from getting sick? What was going to happen if her immune system continued to decline? The number next to her wasn't going to stay with her. Who would. She was sickly, and weak, and dangerous.

Before she could react further he began to make an unfamiliar noise. At first it made her unsure of him, and what was going on, but it was soothing and helped her calm down a bit. Her heartbeat slowed, the fear subsiding, the throbbing in her head beginning to fade.

"We're almost to a safe place for you two to stay." The driver spoke up, turning to look back at them for a moment before his gaze went back to the road.

A safe place? Where was a safe place for someone like her? The guards in the car were an example. A few hours ago they hated her, wanted to punish her, and cut her down, keeping her hidden from the rest of the world. But because of her ability they were now taking the two numbers somewhere safe? It made no sense.

Seeing the number start to calm down brought the intensity level inside the vehicle down significantly. One could tell she was still on edge, her alert level high, but maybe it was the combination of noises, contacts, and familiarity that helped bring her to a slightly less panicked frame of mind. He continued the "purr" as the sedan pulled off the main road and down an old gravel trail. It was rather bumpy and uneven, causing the car to shaken and shimmy even more, but eventually it came to a halt outside a small hunting shack.

It was not nice, nor large in any sense. Looking more like a hovel than anything else, the dark wood cabin looked like it could have been falling apart. Wooden planks had bowed at the behest of time and weather, their combined force warping the wood and opening small gaps, which would no doubt let air through when the wind blew. The guards exited the vehicle and started a brief search, looking for any indication that anyone from the facility was close by. When they decided that the coast was clear, they motioned for the two numbers in the car to join them.

One opened his door, then turned toward the other number and used his head to gesture outside the car, holding his hand out to guide her. The way she had stared at him when he touched her shoulder, her eyes milked over, made him wonder if she could see very well, if at all. The purring resumed, One knowing that the only sound he could make in that moment to make her more comfortable. She wouldn't like the other sounds.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:08 pm

Whatever they were sitting in had stopped shaking, and all had gone quiet. What exactly was going on? Where were they? There was nothing alive aside from the four of them, so what had they stopped for? Seventeen turned to look towards the number; she could not see him gesture with his head, nor could she see his extended hand. All she could see was his color shifting slightly, and it made her brow furrow, but she liked the noise he was making so she followed him out of the vehicle.

When her bare feet hit the ground, Seventeen made a strangled gasping noise, jumping back in surprise. The grass under her feet was soft and damp, and she was not used to feeling such things. One of the guards was close to her and she grabbed him, using another piece of her power to temporarily steal his sight. What she saw appalled her. She rifled through the man's memories and knowledge again to find out what exactly she had been looking at, what she had felt under her feet. After a moment, Seventeen released him, her sight once again faded and she stepped out of the vehicle.

It still felt weird to her, and she did not like the way it felt under her feet. Besides, what were they doing there? How long would they be there? All four of them were not going to fit in that small space. Seventeen began to panic again, fear and uncertainty creeping up her spine.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:08 pm

The female number's hesitation was obvious, even if One were blind and deaf. Seventeen did not know what the world was like outside the institution. She'd never felt the grass under her feet or the rush of actual wind through her hair. It made sense that she would be frightened by everything the outside world had to offer. One stood for a moment, his head cocked to the side, watching her curiously. Had he known that she could not see him, he might have moved more quickly.

One of the guards, still under Seventeen's influence, moved back toward the vehicle, and toward Seventeen herself. Without hesitation, One growled a beastly sound, deep and menacing, and one that he reserved for warnings. The man would receive one, perhaps two before blood was spilled, but luckily for everyone he seemed to understand the nature of the threat and raised his hands, backing away without a word. The growl faded away just before One started moving slowly into the car again.

Remembering her response the first time, One began to purr, his whole chest seeming to vibrate with the sound. Gently he reached in, hooking Seventeen under her knees and around the small of her back. He waited for a moment, hoping she would understand what he was about to do and to situate herself comfortably before scooping her up, cradling her against his bare chest and heading toward the shack, waiting until they were both inside before carefully returning her to the ground, making sure her feet touched solid wood and nothing else. He then looked to the guards, sniffing the air like an animal before turning back to Seventeen, wondering what they planned to do now that the two numbers were safe.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

When One lifted Seventeen out of the car, she tensed, but curled against his chest. He was warm. She made sure that she didn't touch him with her bare skin, she didn't want to invade his mind or hurt him. Not quite understand why he carried her over that wet grass to the small shack, she was grateful for it as the wood under her feet felt familiar enough. She didnt move, however, the layout of the shack was unknown.

When the two numbers were inside the shack, the guards began to unload some supplies. Blankets, food, pillows, water, things that would help them survive for a few days. On the last trip to the shack, Seventeen reached out and grabbed the guards, her brow furrowing in concentration. It was difficult for her to split her ability between the two of them but she managed to bury any and all knowledge of One and Seventeen, where they were, what they had done, and their involvement in their escape. Then she set up a trigger in their minds that would make it impossible for the memories to be dug back up to the surface.

Releasing the guards, they turned and walked, dazed back to the car, got in and drove off, leaving the two numbers alone. As much as she didn't want to be on the outside, it seemed that One did and she wasn't going to be the one to try and drag him back just because she was uncertain.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:09 pm

Watching the vehicle drive away caused some confusion. One wasn't sure why she let them go. It was a peculiar move, and not very tactical. But then again, she didn't seem to know how to fight, so it was unlikely that she was thinking strategically, though she was far from what One would consider stupid. But until there was a better option, One would have to just accept what was and figure it out afterwards. Laying things out, he began to inventory what they had to figure out what they didn't have and what they needed. There was enough food for a few days, water wasn't an issue. The only concern he really had was temperature.

If they were to get caught in the middle of a snow storm, Seventeen's small body would not stand up to the cold. There was only so much he could do for her without getting in her personal space or ditching her completely, which set up an interesting thought. He could leave her behind and strike out on his own. Ditching the dead weight would definitely allow him to travel more quickly, and he would figure out a way to blend in. He could hunt, he could hide, he could run, and he could fight much better on his own.

However, alone, she would not survive, not even a few days. She had saved him back in the facility, and she had helped him escape the facility. Not only that, but what kind of a person would he be if he just abandoned her. A stiff breeze blew through the shack, as if the breath of nature was telling him what he had to do. Shutting everything he could, he encouraged Seventeen to sit down while he set up the a camp stove and a pot of water on top. Some instant noodles and broth would be their meal, meager and not exactly healthy, but it would get them through.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:11 pm

Seventeen watched One's color shift, and sway before he moved her to sit and go through what the guards had left for them. She felt completely useless, watching his color move around the invisible space. Not for the first time thoughts whirled through her head: was he going to leave her? Would she be able to survive on her own? What if he really did leave her and she couldn't make it? A cold wind blew through, Seventeen could hear it against the walls of the cabin, and she pulled her legs close to her chest, hiding her face in her knees. Fear swept through her, and she began to tremble.

This was why she didn't want to leave the facility. Sure, she was abused and tested and nearly killed at least once a month, but it was all she knew. That other number wasn't going to stay with her. She was weak. She couldn't fight. She was blind. He was going to leave her behind, and she knew she couldn't survive on her own. Tightening her grip, she fought back the panic that was welling up inside her, letting her long tangled hair fall into her eyes, shielding the moisture that brimmed her lids.

Seventeen was scared. As twisted and abusive as it was, she wanted to go home. There was nothing about the outside that she knew about, and even if there was what could she do? Seventeen hadn't been able to see for as long as she could remember. She didn't want to die out there, cold and alone.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:11 pm

After a short time, the water was boiling and One was able to start the soup. Thank goodness for training. The facility had inadvertently made him extremely resilient and resourceful. He was trained to survive, unlike his companion, who knew exactly nothing about survival. One wondered how helpless she must have been feeling. The way she curled up on herself spoke volumes about how she felt, and he couldn't blame her for it, though he would have wagered that she didn't understand how vital she had been in the entire escape.

A deep moan billowed softly from his torso as he slipped some noodles into the water and added the seasoning mix. He then sat down next to the other number and draped a blanket over her shoulders, then another over the front of her. He did not look at her while he sat behind her, draping his arms around her and pulling her closer for warmth, as he did not want to embarrass her. One, in his own way, was trying to offer comfort to a number who had very little reason to feel any comfort at all, or really to know what it even felt like.

Again he purred. For her.

One draped blankets over Seventeen, startling her, but she only tensed and pulled them closer to her body. When he pulled her closer to him and started purring again, she began to relax. She shifted her position and turned into him, trying to keep herself from trembling. Curled against him as she was, Seventeen wanted to ask him not to leave her, she wanted to beg him to stay with her and help her, but she was too afraid to open her mouth and speak.

Seventeen could tell, even without touching him, that he knew how to survive. She could hear how heavy his footsteps were, indicating that he was heavily muscled, and strong. The Facility had to have turned him into a strong weapon for their using. Seventeen could wager that they had taught him survival skills, even if they hadn't meant to. While she was weak and frail, he was strong and able. Logically there was no reason for him to stick with her, but she was afraid of being alone. She didn't know how to cook, or fight, or do anything.

"I'm scared."

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Seventeen's admission of fear brought a wave of sadness over One. There he was, holding what was effectively a newborn, his suspicion had been confirmed. Either that, or she was so very manipulated that she could tug at every heartstring he had to get him to stay, to increase her chances of survival. Either way, she could not survive without his intervention, and he would never be able to live with his conscience of he abandoned her.

One whimpered softly, unable to speak his reply. In place of words, he turned her to the side and rested her against his chest, holding her a little more tightly, protectuvely, and possessively. Whatever came, he would not leave her. Hardly knowing her, many would have likely questioned him about his loyalty to the number, but in One's eyes it made perfect sense.

Their escape and survival had bound them together. They represented each other's safety and security. He belonged to her, and she belonged to him, and he would let no one harm her as long as he could help it.

Seventeen curled against the other number, hiding her face against him, her arms slowly wrapping around him as much as she could. She held onto him tightly, her body shaking; she wasn't just using her frail state to lure him, or convince him to stay with her. Her terror was real. It was real, and raw, and paralyzing.

"Don't go.." When Seventeen spoke, her voice was scratchy and coarse, having not used it in years. It was evident in her tone, and the way her voice shook, that she was trying hard not to cry. She thought she looked weak enough, and crying would only make it worse. Under normal circumstances Seventeen didn't let any emotion show whatsoever, but that was within the safety of the facility. Not being around other numbers, not being in the open air, not being free to do what she wanted and make her own choices. She was fine with all of that. But the world was uncertain and unpredictable and it terrified her to no end. Having locked up any significant emotion within the confines of the facility, doctors taking care of her health, she didn't have much to worry about except her date of execution.

Now on the outside, in the open world, Seventeen didn't know how to survive. She didnt know how to take care of herself. She needed One. More than anything she needed him.

The Facility Empty Re: The Facility

Post by Danry Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:14 pm

Lovingly One held the girl, cradled safely in his arm, stroking her hair as one would pet a trembling puppy. Her emotions, her fear, doubt, worry, anxiety... all of it was real. Being ripped from the only place she truly understood had apparently broken the number, despite their constant abuse. Her body itself was a canvas painted with blood and misery, a living testament to the hell she had been through at the Facility, where the moral compass was constantly skewed. They had broken her mind, body, and spirit, leaving very little left for her to draw upon. There was so little of the real Seventeen left that she had forgotten what it felt like to be her own person. They made her believe that she was worthless, and One hated them for it.

His loathing, however, was deeply hidden behind layers of psychosis, the sounds of the vicious voices in his head drowned out by the feline-like purring that shook his entire torso. There would be a time for his hate to be expressed, but it was not then. Wounds were too fresh still. But his vengeance would be brutal; when the time came, he would repay all his abuse, the abuse Seventeen experienced, and all the numbers that have felt the Facility's influence in their lives.

One would have continued his doting upon the young woman, but the noodles were done and about to boil over. He repositioned himself so that he could reach the camp stove and pot, making sure to keep the blankets around Seventeen's body while he deftly retrieved a paper bowl and metal spoon. He then used his other hand to stir the soup and blow over it to cut the steam and cool the broth. Though he was hungry, he maneuvered around the girl until he sat in front of her and held the bowl in his lap while he brought the first cooled sip to Seventeen's lips.
