"You've been assigned different accommodations," the woman replied. The name on her uniform was PVT. Collette. She was little more than a runner of errands and an official presence for a variety of uses, though she only held a very small amount of real power. What made her useful was her mutation, which shielded her from the effects of other mutations. Nova's shadowmancy, for example, would not be able to directly damage her or take a hold of her mind, but would not protect her if Nova blasted a wall down on top of her. Kellan could not directly affect her with his telekinesis or telepathy, but he could lob a brick at her. She was a valuable resource in a base full of Chimera.

"Please, come with me," she instructed. "Your possessions have already been moved to your new dwelling." Waiting for Nova was an idle jeep, ready to roll. Behind the wheel was another MP, though he didn't seem very talkative. Not rudely so, just a quiet individual. Once everyone was inside, including PVT Collette, the Jeep moved away from the public barracks and into the private sector. She pulled up next to one very nondescript building, then pointed toward the entrance.

"Number 23. Take the elevator to the fourth floor, hang a right, third door on your right."

Nova looked from the woman to the building, and back again. Why would she be put in a private building? "Uhm, thanks." She muttered as she exited the vehicle. Walking slowly towards the building she walked inside and to the elevator, waiting for it to get to her floor. She had to lean heavily on the wall, exhaustion from the day weighing on her, as well as a dull throbbing in her chest. Her eyes burned, and it was becoming difficult to breathe when she finally got to the fourth floor. "Hang a right... Third door... Okay."

Walking with her hand on the wall to steady her, she made her way down the hall at a snails pace. She couldn't move much faster, already feeling her lungs burning. As glad as she was to be out of the hospital she wondered if she was ready to be out. At least in the hospital she wasn't alone.

By the time she reached the door a light sheen of sweat covered her skin. She had the pain medicine and the preventative infection medicine in her pocket, but she desperately needed to sit down. I'm stronger than this... It's only a few more steps... Pushing open the door she walked inside, her legs shaking.

The door slowly opened, revealing a small apartment, already decorated and furnished. The entry door opened directly into a living room, roughly 20x25, with a couch, rocking chair recliner, and a television hung on the wall. Across the room were a pair of doors, both closed at that moment. Seeing as the kitchen was off to the left, it made sense that the doors would lead to a bedroom and restroom.

There was also a small dining area, located adjacent to a sliding glass door that lead out to a modest patio. The table was rectangular in shape, with four chairs pushed neatly up to it. The kitchen was a galley style, not very large, but functional enough. Such was the living space of an officer, their allotted privacy a reward for sticking it out in the barracks.

After a few moments, the door on the right opened, and from behind it came Kellan, dressed down in a tank top and shorts. He had taken some personal time to help Nova adjust to her new surroundings. Immediately he went to her, taking the items from her hands and offering to support her to the couch where she could rest. "You're early," he said with a smile.

Nova let Kellan lead her to the couch, where she sat trying to catch her breath. Her chest hurt, but she just closed her eyes and leaned back to relax. "I couldn't... Talk anymore.." She said softly, gritting her teeth against the pain. "He was there... To answer questions.. I.. I can't talk about it anymore. I don't.. Want to."

With all of the stress that she'd gone through that day, her body was exhausted, and it was beginning to take hold. She felt heavy, trying to keep herself awake, but it was difficult and the longer she fought the harder it became. Questions arose in her mind, but she couldn't ask because she lacked the energy.

During her ordeal she had attached to Kellan, more so than she would have anyone else. He was there for her, he saved her, and stayed with her when she was afraid. He protected her, soothing her, when others would have abandoned her. Nova was greatful, and was glad that she was with him, instead of the barracks, where her life might have been in danger.

Over the next several days, Kellan spent his time taking care of Nova, nursing her back to health. They had become closer, certainly closer than he would have ever imagined. Closer than was typically acceptable, though he wasn't entirely sure if she felt the way he did. The more time Kellan spent with her, the stronger his feelings became. He let her sleep in his bed, kept her inside, kept her safe. A nurse stopped by occasionally to check on Nova, at Kellan's request, of course. But as much as he wanted to just stay there with her, the time was coming for him to return to work, and for her to return to training.
>
> Powerful healing solvents had expedited Nova's recovery, but she would always have a scar. Nine days after the incident, Kellan received a message from his ranking officer. That morning, after making breakfast for Nova and himself, he sat across from her at the table holding the data pad that gave them their choice of futures.
>
> "Looks like the free ride is over... they want me to return to duty and you to return to training. If we don't go back tomorrow, they're going to wash us both out." Kellan sighed slightly. "I guess it had to end eventually; I don't blame them. They're paying for us to be here. We might as well pull our weight. The good news is that you don't have to go back to the barracks. You can stay here, if you still want to."

The time spent away from the looks, and the whispers was good for Nova. It gave her a chance to calm down, to get back in her right state of mind, and she healed without fear of being attacked again. Kellan was a big factor in her ability to do so as well. He took care of her, made sure she was okay, sometimes annoyingly so with his insistence that she took her medication even if she felt she didn't need it. By the time the ninth day came Nova no longer felt any pain from her wound, she was able to move freely, breathe easier.

"I can stay here? I don't have to go back?" Over the course of her stay she had grown attached to her SC. No one had cared for her like he did, and the longer she was with him the stronger her feelings grew. She had no way to determine if he felt the same so she kept that information to herself.

"I'm fine to go back to training, I'm already really far behind.." Her hand lightly brushed across her scar. She would never forget what happened that night. Never.

"You're welcome to stay. I've... really liked having you here." A slight blush came to Kellan's face. His ears grew red and warm as he considered what it would mean to him for Nova to make it their place rather than his. He thought about the night to come, when he would wrap an arm around her for the first time, to hold her gently, perhaps even kiss her if the moment was right. Could he wait that long before telling her how he really felt?

"We can go work out today if you feel up to it. Tomorrow's going to be brutal for both of us, but maybe we can shake the cobwebs off and get back into the swing of things." It was clear to Kellan that Nova needed little help in the hand-to-hand mundane combat arena, as she had maneuvered herself well in every engagement thus far. But using her mutation during combat was a much more difficult task, as it required splitting focus and training muscles to react instantly to any situation.

Not to mention the fact that she would look even hotter in the ring.

Novas cheeks heated up, and she looked at her breakfast, trying to hide the red hue. He wanted her to stay, too. Warmth spread through her, and a small smile spread across her lips. It was settled, then; she was staying with him.

"I am definitely up for working out. I need to get used to moving around again." She finished her food and headed to the bathroom to get changed. If she was going to prove that she was more than just an aggressive fighter, she needed to work on control. Especially before she went among the others.

Only in the bathroom a few minutes, Nova emerged in tight spandex style pants, and a tank top that barely covered her new scar. Normally she'd cover her her tattoos, but she decided they were a part of her and she wasn't going to hide them anymore, besides those clothes were easier to move in.

"Ready when you are," She grinned.

While she was changing, Kellan walked into their bedroom and changed as well. Sporting a black tank and basketball shorts, he emerged just in time to see Nova reenter the room. His jaw would have hit the floor if he'd taken another step. Dressed in form-fitting attire, he could not help but stare at Nova, marveling at the sight of her figure. Her top dipped low enough to show her scar, and the pants held onto her hips and rear quite tightly. They'd be easy to move in, but if they were to fight, it wouldn't be hard for her to beat him as distracted as he would be.

A smile tugged at the corners of Kellan's lips as he soaked in the sight of her for another moment, his ears once again turning red. "Damn... i'm impressed. If you fight half as good as you look, then i'm in serious trouble." The time for shyness was ending. Seeing as how she had chosen to stay with him in the apartment rather than leaving, he felt it was time to start showing Nova how he felt.

Step one: flirt.

"Of course i'm already in trouble. Do you realize how hard it is to concentrate on your movements when I can't stop staring at your body?" Kellan chuckled a bit, hoping that she didn't mind the flirtatious banter he presented. Perhaps he'd read too deeply between the lines, but... why else would she have worn something to seductive?

With wide eyes, Nova stared at Kellan, her face turning bright red. She hadn't thought that she looked that good, but judging by his reaction he liked what he saw. Trying not to let shyness get the better of her, she smirked slyly. "Well, how about we test that. One on one?"

Heading for the door, Nova felt herself get jittery. She was unsure if it was because she just challenged her SC to a one on one fight, or if it was because she was glad he noticed her. Either way, she couldn't back down and she wasn't going to change. It would be nice to get practice before she got back out there anyway, and what better way than with a Squad Commander?

Overwatch: Rise of the Chimera - Page 4 Empty Re: Overwatch: Rise of the Chimera

Post by Danry Wed Sep 11, 2019 8:20 am

"I'm you're huckleberry," Kellan quoted with a smile, following her out of the domicile and out into the courtyard. The morning air was brisk, but significantly warmer than it had been over the last few weeks. Winter was giving way to spring, and a heat wave was moving through the air. Soon it would be downright pleasant outside, which Kellan eagerly awaited. There was still no snow on the ground, which meant jogging to the gym. A good run was just the thing they would need to warm up, then the real fun would begin.

The arena itself was a large structure, circular in shape with a dome sheltering the interior. The ceiling was motorized to slide back and forth depending on the weather and need for variety. The main floor was used for arena matches, with bench seating circling the arena floor. The lower levels housed different training rooms, generally reserved for sparring and target practice. Bringing Nova with him through the entrance, he lead her to an elevator and hit b3.

Once the doors open again, there was a long hallway in front of the two, with large garage-style doors on each side with significant space in between. From the hall, one could hear the occasionally thud or buzz, perhaps even an odd curse word here or there. Some of the rings were already in use, as indicated by a glowing red light above the door. There were no windows viewing into the rooms, so it was impossible to know exactly what was happening inside.

Kellan had no trouble finding them an open ring, despite the number that were already in use. He escorted Nova through, then pressed a button on the wall to lock the door. Inside was a very simple fighting ring, illuminated by one spotlight centered with the floor. Red tape marked the in-bounds area. The floor was slightly padded, though not enough to be comfortable enough to sleep on. A control panel was hidden inside the wall, which Kellan momentarily pulled down long enough to type in some information.

"Step into the ring. We'll go over a few rules, then get right to it."

Following Kellan to where they would be sparring, Nova grinned the entire time, letting the run open her lungs, get her body moving again. It was refreshing to be outside after a week and a half confined inside.

The building where they would be sparring didn't look as big on the outside as it was on the inside. Walking through the hall, she heard noises from others, and she began to get excited, but nervous about her challenge to Kellan. No one could see inside the doors, no one would know if she accidentally hurt him. Her apprehension grew as she stepped inside the ring, waiting for instructions. Perhaps this wasn't such a good idea after all.

Nova was worried that her control wasn't good enough. Chewing on her lower lip, she frowned, but tried to hide her nervousness as best she could.

Kellan stretched his arms behind him, though he kept his eyes locked on the ring. He stepped inside the circle, then smiled slightly to Nova. "Welcome to the ring," he began. "In here, we learn to use our mutations both offensively and defensively. In here, we learn control, restraint, and patience. Every Chimera has a limit to how much energy they can expend before the can no longer sustain their ability. Here you will learn where your limit is, and how to push beyond it."

Standing roughly five feet from Nova, he squared his shoulders and entered a basic defensive stance. He'd seen her power when she was furious, but never when she was thinking clearly. "Your first task is to hit me. I'll have my shield up, so don't worry about hurting me. I won't fight back, but only try to block or evade your attacks."

He silently hoped that his shield would be enough. "Whenever you're ready..."

All she had to do was hit him. It was simple. She didn't need to use the shadows, not really. Maybe as an armor to get through the shield, but it wouldn't actually hurt him. Nova felt a little better about being in the ring with him, now that she didn't have to use the slithering tendrils that seemed to dig in to her conscious.

"Okay," Nova took a deep breath in through her nose, with her eyes closed. When she opened them, her hues were glowing bright, neon blue.

Her shadow on the ground shifted, moving closer to Kellan to test and see where the boundaries of his shield were. Once she figured that out, her shadow vanished, and her body dimmed, like someone took a spotlight off of her. The darkness clung to her skin and hardened like thin armor, most of it centered around her fist.

Turning her body in a defensive position, Nova slammed her fist into the shield. When her hand made contact, shadow tendrils spread out along it, searching for a weak spot to sneak into.

When Nova's fist connected with Kellan's shield, there was a surge of orange ripples. His pupils limned in orange to match his mutation, he watched as the shadows probe for weaknesses. "Not bad," he said. "Strong hit, but you'll need to be faster." The shield began to curl around the shadowy motes, surrounding them so they never found an opening.

The shield was staunch, certainly well practiced. Not invulnerable, however. Kellan was surprised by how much raw power was behind the attack. Nova's potential was greater than he suspected, perhaps even strong enough to propel her into the upper echelon where Kellan himself held a seat. The implications of such an achievement were vast and demanding, but could be greatly rewarding, if not hard on the mind.

Nova raised an eyebrow, the corners of her lips twitching up into a smirk. The shield was sturdy, but not impenetrable, and the frontal blow was a distraction. The shadows under her feet, cast by the light in the room, had worked their way around behind the shield. While he was focused on the probing shadows in front, there were more in the back.

"I think I'm doing just fine," Nova stepped back, and slammed her fist into the shield again and again. The more times she hit it, the more darkness encased her fist making the force stronger. Nova was determined to get in to hit him.

Blow after blow impacted Kellan's shield, each one felt by the SC as Nova continued her assault. Still, he did not retaliate. It was very obvious that she belonged in the S-Class of Chimeras. The accelerated program would be a great place for her to be. The cadets there would be more accepting, more friendly even, for they knew the type of life she had been living before joining Overwatch.

Suddenly an attack came in from a different angle. Kellan cursed pushed himself straight up. The shield collapsed as his attention was focused elsewhere. Vaulting over the girl, he touched down behind her, though his feet didn't seem to actually touch the ground. "Not bad, Nova," he said with a grin. Again, he did not attack but kept his guard up. The shield had been brought around him, more resembling an armor than anything else.

"From now on, this is a full match. I'll be fighting back now."

Nova turned around, shifting her stance slightly. Her style of fighting was untrained, unorthodox street fighting. Kellan was going to start fighting back, which meant that she had to use more of her mundane fighting than her ability. The fear that she was going to hurt him was gnawing at the back of her mind.

"Come on, then." Nova twitched her fingers, and a shield of her own formed in front of her. Normally Nova would just use her shadows to overtake the room and cast it into darkness, but the uncertainty at being able to control it was causing her to keep a tight leash on the shadows. She couldn't let them sneak in and take hold of her.

Kellan did not hesitate. He came in fast, using his ability to hasten and strengthen his learned fighting style. A sort of kung-fu mixed with American boxing, everything happened from this hips up. His strikes were quick and powerful, but aimed away from the typically targeted areas. Rather than aiming for the face and the gut, his fists came in toward her shoulders, solar plexus, and rib cage.

Chi flow sites. There was no question that hitting particular parts of the body would cause numbness, pain, or weakness... even paralysis. Whether one believed in chi or simply believed them to be nerve clusters, it was an effective strategy nevertheless. If she defended against them successfully, he would intensify his efforts. If not, she might find herself back stepping.

Nova did not expect that level of power, and though her shadows held, barely, she stumbled back a few steps. Furrowing her brow, she gritted her teeth, readjusted her stance, as shadows latched on to her legs holding her firm to the ground. Clearly she was not going to attack back, she was all defense, but that didn't mean she was going to let him get a hit on her.

Using the shadows she covered herself completely, nearly vanishing in the darkness. If she was hard to see, she'd be hard to hit.

Kellan jumped back a few steps when Nova disappeared into shadow. Not being able to see her would make her very difficult to hit, and would leave him vulnerable to a cloaked counter attack. He had no way of knowing if she could strike from the darkness, or if she would come back into vision. Either way, it would be next to impossible to evade any of her attacks at close range. "Very clever," he said with a smile. "Can't hit what I can't see. That'll work to your advantage, especially in nighttime scenarios."

The SC's stance relaxed a bit as he tried to work out a way to counter her shroud of darkness. He knew vaguely where she was, but believed it entirely possible that she was no longer in the same place. He listened for footsteps, but heard nothing. Only blind attacks with an area of effect stood any chance of hitting her, though they tended to be draining and not so very reliable. Then a thought entered his mind.

"Thirty seconds. Can you end the fight before then?" Provocation was certainly a way to force people into attacking when they didn't want to. While Nova was no dummy, he wondered if her competitive side would win over the logical side and accept the challenge. Kellan was completely unsure of who would walk away the victor from that match, and that didn't bother him. Either way, they would both win.

Trying to figure out how to hit him without actually hurting him, the cadet circled Kellan in the shadows. Her ability allowed her to hide and recuperate, or come up with her next move. It was great for running away when she was on lockdown in a foster home, and even better hiding from the police when the parents found her missing. It was one of the easiest, and first things she learned to do with her mutation. In this case, it was just as good, though she couldn't hide forever.

Hearing his comment, Nova scoffed, and when she spoke her voice seemed to come from every shadow. "Of course I can." Stopping behind him, Nova emerged from the shadows, crouched, her left leg swinging out, hopefully to catch his legs and knock him on his ass.

Searching through complete darkness was no easy task. Despite his best efforts, Kellan could not locate the mysterious master of shadow, not until her attack came in from behind. Caught off guard, he had no idea that Nova had flanked him. He suddenly felt something connect with the back of his leg, sending them out in front of him and bringing him to the floor. The blow did no damage, as his armor was still up when she attacked, but it did knock him onto the flat of his back.

"OOF!" he exhaled. The one benefit to the strike was that Kellan could now see his cadet in training. Locking onto her with his Chimeric ability, or rather the front of her top, he yanked hard, trying to bring her down to her stomach. Off balance, it was quite a bit more difficult to focus long enough to use his power correctly, but it wasn't the first time he had to fight on his back.

"Don't get cocky!"

Nova tumbled forward, but didn't hit the ground. She caught herself and proceeded back into the shadows to hide. She'd been able to catch him off guard once, but to do it again was going to be tricky. She had to act fast or she wouldn't be able to get at him again, but she was determined not to use any more of her shadows than absolutely necessary.

With limited time, she struggled to come up with an adequate strategy. In the end she chose to lie in wait, see how he would try to come at her before making her move. It would be easier to come up with a counter, than trying to guess where he was going to go next.

Pushing himself back to his feet, Kellan took a moment to refocus his thoughts. He'd gotten sloppy over the time he'd spent nursing Nova back to health. He could blame his uneven combat effectiveness on many things, but none of that mattered. Accepting the fault as his own, he brought himself back to the present and to the fight. If she was going to be an officer, he could not afford to cut corners for her. She was more important than that. As much as he hated the idea, he was going to have to stop pulling punches and start getting serious. Kellan had no idea that they were being watched; a small group had gathered around a monitor in the control room to watch the duel, for purposes they had yet to reveal.

Kellan's mind raced, trying to sort through information to find the best way to counter attack. His vision was almost completely useless, except to remind him of the ever oppressive feeling of the darkness closing in around him. He could not hear Nova, and she could appear from anywhere to strike. Though he could not target her, he was far from helpless. Reach up above his head, Kellan slammed his fist on the floor, sending a powerful shock wave in every direction. It rippled through the darkness, exerting physical force through the non-physical shadow. If he could force her outside of her hiding spot, he would have the advantage.
